Hernando Cortez burned 11 or 12 ships when he reached Mexico (Veracruz, maybe around 1514-1515). His plan was not to give his men any other option than to join him on the Mexican expedition.

Alexander the great used the same tactics in a famous battle in the 3 century. His army was totally outnumbered, but Alexander did not want to lose and told his men that the only way they could return to their homes would be by the means of conquered enemy ships.
