It can be argued that the United States' drift into the role of a world power began when it defeated Spain in the Spanish American War of 1898. With a victory over Spain it won the US several Spanish territories, especially the far east Asian island group of the Philippines. It had joined other imperialist European nations in power and in industry. It took a leap forward in the Western Hemisphere by helping Panamanian rebels break away from Colombia. The result was the Panama Canal that controlled a shortcut between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The US was abundant with natural resources and mining industries that provided iron ore, coal along with silver and gold. It had a fair Immigration policy and attracted workers and intellectuals to the US. Its inclusion as one of the Western Allies in World War One, clearly moved it up to the level of a world power.
