The Puritans left England in order to worship God in the way they believed was right. They founded three colonies in the New England, Plymouth in 1620 and Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630, both located in Massachusetts, and the Connecticut Colony in 1636.

Some people say they came because they wanted religious freedom, but that's not really correct, because they believed their way of worship was the only right way and did not allow people who believed something different to worship as they saw fit. The Puritans settled only in the New England region.

The Pilgrims left Holland at the same time as a major religious persecution was occurring. Their beliefs were closer to those of the group being persecuted than to those of the pure Calvinists. The President of Holland had just been killed. They decided to get out of Dodge. They abandoned their village and escaped to England. They were refugees in England with no work and nowhere to live. They were desperate. They found a group of businessmen who would help them start a colony and they sailed to America.

The Puritans had been thrown into prison because of their beliefs. They did not like being in prison. When they got out, they had the chance to sail to America. They took it. They feared they would go back to prison if they refused the offer. So, they left Boston, England and founded Boston in America.

They left because there was too much religious freedom in England, they wanted to establish a colony (in North America) where they could dictate the terms of religious practice.
