It is likely that you have a bad ground in the system... check all the ground wires
There are pages and pages of things that can cause a check engine light. You need to have it checked with a scantool. Then the code can be diagnosed and repaired.
No, You may if you like replace it with a 3.4. OVH It will bolt up just fine. Make sure that you replace the harness aswell. The 3.1 harness on the 3.4 will read out trouble codes and turn engine light on.
If it is a 3.1 any 1992 GM motor will work. If you are doing a motor swap from 3.1 to a 3.4 Dual Cam engine it can be done but you have to change more than the engine. The wiring harness and ECM (computer) have to be changed. Possible mounts also. If you are swapping to a newer engine (say a 1998) you might have to change the wiring and ECM.
