White smoke out the exhaust is definitely a sign of a cracked cylinder head or a blown head gasket, possibly even a cracked engine block.
Not something to be driving around with, as more damage can occur from overheating the engine.
Also the engine could stop running and strand you someplace you may not want to be stranded in.
