- Jamestown, Virginia was a business venture.
- The Massachusetts Bay Colony was founded by the Puritans seeking their own religious freedom but they did not allow religious freedom of others in their jurisdiction. They were extremely religious and strict and their way of life did not last long although their influence survives.
- The Rhode Island Colony was founded by Roger Williams, banished from Massachusetts, as a place of religious freedom and separation of church and state and egalitarianism.
- The Southern colonies were largely populated by Englishmen trying to establish income producing estates and the way of life their families enjoyed in England- plantations.
