When the United States were first formed after the Revolutionary War, the founders wanted to create a government that was the complete opposite of the previous ruler, Great Britain. So instead of a monarchy, they decided on a representative democracy, or republic, based on the ancient Roman Republic (this is what almost all democratic nations are to date). The United States then made the Constitution after the Articles of Confederation (a failed attempt at government) which is one of the most flawless and influential constitutions in the world. They also created the Bill of Rights along with this which insured the rights and liberties of a citizen of the country.
