In 2003 Toyota redesigned the corolla engine. They now use a timing chain instead of a timing belt, which is still used in the Hondas. This will save a few hundred dollars for replacement of the timing belt at the recommended mileage (60,000).

This is just my opinion. Buy the Toyota. Hondas are like fake Toyotas. They say they are just as good or better, but I don't believe it. I worked for a Toyota dealer and Honda dealer and I can tell you first hand there is a big difference in the quality.

Stick with American built. You would be better off with a Chevy cavalier or something.

ACTUALLY_____ Corolla's get better gas mileage of a 42 HWY compared to the Civic's 32 HWY. I have had both a civic and now I own a 2005 Corolla S and the Corolla is definitely a step up. Interior design along with road noise is better. Both cars are better than Domestic. My close friend with a 2004 cavalier has had non stop problems from the door not sealing to the radio and a/c not working correctly.

I just picked up a 2005 Corolla S about 3 weeks ago. I looked diligently at both the Civic and the Corolla. After looking at both in depth, hands down the Corolla was superior in quality, fuel effiency and looks (opinion though). If you interested in making a kid-racer, bolt-on fast and furious wanna' be, however buy the Civic. After driving my 'rolla for a month now, I have absolutly nothing bad to report, and find myself loving this car more and more every day!!

yup get a Toyota, because Toyota's last in the long run. plus too many hondas on the road.

Honda Civic looks better than Toyota Corolla, but in term of quality, Toyota is better than Honda.

Gas prices will probably not be going down much anymore, so I decided I needed a more efficient car to travel 38 miles one way to work and back. My Hyundai Santa Fe was a sweet ride, but not very efficient at an average 22mpg.

I narrowed my list to used Civics and Corollas. I had a number of prerequisites for the car I would eventually purchase... manual 5 speed; cruise control; fuel efficient; able to get me into the flow of traffic in a hurry; power windows and door locks; remote keyless entry; the vehicle also had to afford a comfortable driving position and headroom for my 6 foot self. The only other option I would have liked, but decided to add after purchase was a sun roof.

I drove several of both and found the Civic to be fun to drive and almost as gutsy as the Corolla. HOWever, the Corolla feels much sturdier, is much quieter and gets a very impressive 36 to 40 plus miles per gallon. The bolts and fittings under the Civic hoods all had oxidation and were looking pretty grim. The Corolla engine parts were clean with very little oxidation. Both vehicles develop a slight vibration through the steering wheel at speeds above 65 mph (even after standard high-speed spin balancing - this is usually taken only to 50mph in all the shops I am familiar with). The Corolla seems to hug the road somewhat better than the Civic.

I paid about $1500 more for the 2003 Corolla S I eventually bought than the comparably equipped Civics I had examined and drove. I am convinced it was the far better bargain.

I purchased a new 2001 Corolla in October 2000. It now has 213000 miles on it. About 37400 miles per year hauling around office machine parts. It's been in the shop once for a repair. The only other things I've had to do to it were tires, oil, and brakes. Even with it's high mileage it still gets 40mpg on the highway. I certainly like the snazier styling of the Civic, but I think the Corolla is a better value.
