The Passlock security system is the problem. Should be recalled. Go here http://newrockies.com/?ap_id=craigpeate for a module to bypass the system completely. The resistor workaround at the key isn't always the only problem. I tried it on my 99 Suburban and it didn't do any better with the resister bypass. You need to eliminate the entire security system. Buy the pro module for $179 plus shipping and save yourself the hassle of dealing with it ever again. Or you could go to the dealer and have them replace the entire system for over $1000. They will have to replace the key/tumbler/hall effect switch/wiring and EVO-Passlock module to get it right. Check out my profile page for a list of vehicles affected.

there is a problem with the vats system, start there.

if the light goes off it's probably the starter...
The factory alarm causing the issue would be the security light flashing above the RPM guage. If the security light is flashing and the car will not start, follow the directions listed below. To reset the factory alarm, turn the ignition switch to the "on" position NOT the start position for 15min. You will see the security light go off after 15min.
The Security light "on" means that your VATS, or vehicle anti theft system is in operation. therefore, to deter theft, it won't start. Usually, putting the key in the door lock and turning it will do the trick.
do not start vehicle but turn key to on position then off three times and on that third time leave it on the "on" position takes 10 to 15 minutes to reset the security light should stop blinking.
Turn key on and leave it on for ten minutes then it will go out and it will start. It thinks it is being stolen. Just did it to mine. Seems to reset the security system.
To reset the security light on an Oldsmobile vehicle, first the driver must turn the key to the "on" position, without starting the engine. Next, he or she should turn the key to attempt to start the engine, but not completely, so that it doesn't start before moving the key back to the "on" position. After about 12 minutes, the light will?æbe reset, and the key should be removed.?æ
depending on the year you can disconnect the positive battery cable for a few minutes and then reconnect it. it may reset the security system.
my secrurity system on my trans am went and you unplug the system and turn the key on the on positon and let it sit for 10 minutes and it will start.
When your security light comes on and your car will not start, turn you key to the on position and wait 10 minutes. The light will go off and you need to turn the key to the off position, then restart your car.
On many GM vehicles it is: turn key to ON (do not start), push accelerator to the floor 3 times. I hope this helps you. Mark on my 1999 you turn key to on(do not start) then push and hold trip miles reset for about ten seconds. oil light will go out. Steve
Put the key in the ignition and turn it into the run position, but don't start the car. Leave the key in the ignition until the security light stops flashing. The car will start now.
The security system prevents unauthorized operation of the car, your system has been tripped, and the car disabled. You will need to reset the security system to start it. If you have the original key you should be able to do it.
