There are a few things that can cause tail lights to go out such as:
1. A corroded light socket
2. Blown bulb(s)
3. Tail light relay (some cars)
4. Tail light fuse
5. Faulty or touching wires
If no lights appear when step on the brake pedal, while you check the lights from the rear, check the fuse that connects the brake lights. Pull out the fuse and look at the wire in the central window. If the wire is broken, replace the fuse. Make sure the new fuse is not blown, and carries the same amperage. Take the lights are out to check which one isn't working. The problem may be cured by replacing the bulb in a brake light that's out. A burned out bulb has a broken filament and a dark brown spot on one side. Check the owners manual for bulb type. Check the circuit if replacement bulbs and fuses do not restore the lights and also check the battery power and the light on your volt tester.
sometimes its because somebody put in a light bulb wrong & is back feeding the system.
LAST TIME I RAN IN 2 THAT - SOMEBODY HAD INSTALLED A TAILLIGHT BULB IN BACKWARDS-was forced in 180? out.BUT there could also B a bare wire @ the brake light switch or back 2 the rear bulbs.
The bulb is burnt out. If the problem was a fuse, then all brake lights and probably the dashboard lights would be out as well.
Check the switch on the brake pedal
Probably the rubber bumper/stopper which depresses the brake switch is gone/disintegrated. Check beneath the brake pad for broken pieces. Without this piece in place, the switch is always closed and therefore powered to light up the lights.
it means u have to change your brake lights
A short in the tail light circuit. Brake and turn are on another circuit. Dash light power is fed from the tail light fuse to the dimmer switch and on to the dash lights. Look for a short in the tail light wiring circuit. Also check the license plate light for a short as it is on the tail light circuit also. Had a car with blown fuse, traced the circuit for tail lights and found nothing. Jumped the fuse and burned out the wiring to the tail lights. Come to find out, the short was in the license plate light. Also a bad headlight switch can cause this. Both tail light circuit and headlight circuit go through the switch. Contacts for the tail lights may be bad (defective switch common).
I have that same problem with a 2001 tacoma no power rear tail lights brake light works and nothing for dash lights i need answers i am stumped Any real answers to this please???
usually it is a fault with the brake light switch located on the brake pedal arm. there is a plastic button that sometimes disintegrates and no longer allows contact with the switch. Check that first. You can find a replacement by using a body fastener.
It is probably the brake lights that are on due to a misinstalled or damaged brake light switch.
i got a 2006toyota highlander my tail lights dont work but, every other light works please help me
Brake lights and turn signals are on a separate circuit from the tail lights. Tail lights are on the same circuit with the dashboard lights. If the dashboard lights aren't working either, check the fuse. If they ARE working, check the headlight switch.
If the headlights are on and brake lights work but not the tail lights, it is possible there is a short in the electrical wires. Another cause for this could be that the tail light bulbs are burned out. Most vehicles have more than one bulb inside the tail lights to control different lights at the same time.
My Brake tail Lights Stay on when my car is complete turned off and my lights are off to.
Look for a fuse labeled TAIL LIGHTS. There are 2 separate circuits, one for brake turn and flasher and the other is for tail lights.
are you sure it is the brake lights and not the tail lights. if it is the brake lights you most likely have a short some where. go to a auto eletrican It is the brake lights which turn on. Short in the switch or the wiring?
on my 99 aurora the lights are auto i dont touch them and the tail light stay on to
It could be a blown fuse. Tail lights and brake/turn are on separate fuses. Apparently there is not a ground problem since brake/turn works OK.
On a toyota tacoma 2003 SR5 when the tail lights are turned on the brake lights come on and when the tail lights are of the brake lights work just fine what could be the problem. If the truck has a trailer plug, inspect the plug and plug wiring for damage and corrosion.
Are you saying your tail lights themselves do not work and only the brake lights work. If that is the case, check the fuse, and then check the tail light bulbs.
its on different bulbs
