100k miles is suggested, but if you're getting terrible gas mileage, you notice some arc'd spots on the spark plug wires, you notice a powder like coating around the wires / distributor, or something seems off. Just pop the 2 screws for the cap and check to see if the rotor is burnt up at the end. It'll look like an electrical burn on a screw driver if you ever arc'd it across your battery. Make sure you mark your wires if they need to be pulled off of the cap to ensure proper re-connection later on.

Remove the distributor cap by unscrewing the clips or screws, then carefully lift it off to expose the rotor. Take note of the rotor's orientation, unscrew it from the distributor shaft, and replace it with the new rotor in the same position. Finally, reattach the distributor cap, ensuring it is secure, and reconnect the battery.
