∙ 2015-07-15 21:16:11the sending unit is nothing more than a float in the gas tank. Check in the trunk first and see if you can access the sender from there. you will have to pull the carpet up. If you can,you should be able to disconect the electical plug-in sending info the the gauge. try that. It can only be the sending unit or the gauge itself. I would start by pulling the power to each one.

∙ 2015-07-15 21:16:11Sounds like a wiring or sender unit problem. Ground wire at sender unit, see if it stays steady. If it still jumps around, wiring/gauge problem. If it stays steady, sender unit should be replaced. Good idea to do an oil pressure test as well.

The problem is most likely the sending unit, not the gauge itself. The sending unit would have to be replaced.
You need to check the power and ground at the fuel tank. If that is okay the float is most likely bad.
There is a problem with the SRS. This is not a DIY repair. Take this to a professional.
Thermostat is sticking.
The gauge, wiring or sending unit is bad.
The switch located on the door frame may be broken is a dome light stays on in a Mercury Sable. The switch may need to be repaired. If that is not the issue, a mechanic can diagnose the issue. Another way to help find a solution is to look in the owner manual or repair book for the car.
