What factors should a firm consider before dropping a product-line?

the firm needs to decide one thing only: is it in its best financial interest? Of course this can be separated into long term and short term best interest. Factors which need to be considered long term: is this a marketing tool?, does it draw people in who buy other products?, Does it help or hinder our long term image or reputation? What is the long run market for this product going to look like? Short run factors for consideration: Is this product profitable, and if it is not is this because of the way our accountants have allocated fixed overhead to the product various product lines?, Is continuing this product the best available use of our resources? Is this product consuming a scarce resource which could be used to make other things? Are our production resources a sunk cost? Profitablility is the most important part of the consideration and can be "played" with. That is, some product lines will look less profitable than others based on the way the accountants have chosen to allocate the overhead. Also, if most of the production materials are sunk then it makes sense to continue producing because there is little differential cost to making additional units.

What branch of government is responsible for the economy crash?

congress is primarily responsible for the economic collapse of the economy in 2008. president obama placed the blame squarely on president george w. bush when he stated that, as he walked into the oval office of the white house, '...wrapped in a nice bow was a $1.3 trillion deficit sitting right there on my doorstep." however, obama raised it over $200 billion in 2009.

congress is in control of government revenue under its constitutional responsibilities. house speaker nancy pelosi and majority senate leader harry reid "inherited" a $160 billion deficit in january 2007, then quickly added $1.2 trillion to the deficit three years later. unfortunately, president bush signed these increases into law which were passed by the democratic congress. it is ironic that speaker pelosi stated that "Our new America will provide unlimited opportnity for future generations, not burden them with mountains of debt."

the 9/11 attacks on the united states weakened the economy and the actions of the democratic congress made matters so much worse. the pelosi/reid economic plan completely eliminated the CBO (congressional budget office) projections of a $370 billion surplus null and void. now the projected deficit for the period 2007-2016 is $7.1trillion.

what kind of track record is that for our "future generations" mrs. pelosi?

Is their a way to look up if you received social security stimulus check in 2009?

You will need to look at your tax return for 2009. It would have been shown on your return as received or claimed as part of a refund. You can also look back on your bank statement as many people were automatically sent the payment if they were recipients of Social Security or VA benefits. The payment would have been sent to the bank account where your benefit check is sent to every month. If you received it automatically, it would have came in the fall of 2009 or first few months of 2010.

Why isn't the lower working class getting a stimulus check instead of just people on ssi?

First, people on SSI are probably on less income than "lower working class". But, the reason they are getting a $250 check is very, very simple.....they didn't get the one for $300-600 in 2008...which "lower working class" did. All working people are getting the "Making Work Pay Credit." This credit will be calculated on their 2009 Form 1040. Federal income tax withholding has been reduced to reflect this credit.

Why is economics considered a social science?

Economics is the study of the mechanisms by which humans allocate resources. As such, it is a study of human behavior. Human behavior is not derived from physical laws (or, sometimes, even rational decisions), so it falls outside the realm of "hard" science.
Economics is a social science because it is the study of the distribution of wealth, consumptive patterns, and means of production. Social stratification determine all of these attributes of economics, and thus economics is a social science.

Who are the culprits of the housing bubble?

The number of culprits is almost infinite. While President Carter started the issue with the community reinvestment act, we all, as Americans, created the issue.

For some strange reason we believe that all Americans deserve to own a home, have children and health care. The result is that we forced banks to make poor loans. We tax working people ever more and then ask them to give health care to the laziest portion of society at the expense of our children.

There is no right to own a home. There is no right to a living wage or health care. When we make false "rights" for people, we take away the needed drive to push forward. When there is no drive to move forward and a right to the finer things of life. You get chaos and failure. Other countries certainly promote our desire to implode. It makes their lives easier. If America fails, every other country wins. When we wish to make friends with other countries, the easiest way to to promote our failure.

Being greedy and wanting to make friends with other countries is the problem. Everyone is to blame.

Will all veterans receive a stimulus check?

The 2009 $250 "stimulus" is for some social security recipients, nothing to do with being a Vet. The $250 will also be given to veterans who are receiving veterans' disability payments.

Russell Stimulus Model?

Simple yet fundamental model of how people respond to environments. The environment, its conscious and unconscious perceptions, and interpretation influence how people feel in that environment. Feelings, rather than perceptions/thoughts drive behavior. Typical outcome variable is "approach" or "avoidance" of an environment, but other possible outcomes can be added to model.

Model of effect

Cognition the mental process of knowing including aspects such as awareness, perception, reasoning, and judgment. Affect or feeling is central to how people respond to an environment. Russel's model of Affect helps in understanding feelings in service environments. Emotional responses have 2 main dimensions: Pleasure and arousal.

Pleasure is a direct subjective response to the environment, depending on how much the individual likes or dislikes the environment.

Arousal refers to how stimulated the individual feels, ranging from deep sleep to the highest levels of adrenaline. Arousal quality depends on information rate or load of an environment. An environment is stimulating if it has a high information rate, when it is complex or has motion or change in it. A relaxing environment with low information has the opposite characteristic. Arousal is much more subjective than pleasure.

Examples

· Anger is high arousal and high displeasure. Most emotions can be dissected into cognitive and affective components.

· Firms can set targets for affective states.

· A bungee - jumping firm might want its customers to feel aroused.

· A disco or theme park operator might want customers to feel excited.

· A bank will want customers to feel confident

· A spa would want customers to feel relaxed.

· An overnight flight would want its customers sleepy after dinner.

Drivers of affect

Affect can be caused by perception and cognitive processes of any degree of complexity. However, the more complex a cognitive process becomes, the more powerful its potential impact on affect. Eg a customer's disappointment with service level and food quality in a restaurant ( a complex, cognitive process, with perceived quality compared to previously held service expectations) cannot be compensated by a simple cognitive process such as the subconscious perception of pleasant background music.

Most encounters are routine, with little high - level cognitive processing. Hence most of the time it is the simple cognitive process - the conscious and even unconscious perceptions of space, colour, scents,, etc. that determine how people feel in the service setting. In case higher levels of cognitive processes are triggered, through something surprising in the service environment, it is the interpretation of this surprise that determine people's feelings.

Behavioral consequences of affect

Pleasant environments result in approach, unpleasant ones in avoidance behaviours. Arousal acts as an amplifier of the basic effect of pleasure on behaviour. In a pleasant environment increasing arousal can lead to a stronger positive customer response. Conversely, in an unpleasant environment one should not increase arousal levels as this would move customers towards the Distressing region. Eg Loud fast beat music would increase the stress levels of shoppers trying to push their way through crowds in a mall. In such situations the information load of the environment should be lowered.

Why is the stock market less important than other sources of financing?

The Stock Market is actually a giant Ponzi scheme. If a CEO gets funding from the market he also subjects his or her company to the manipulations of stock value that take place in the market. Many serious business people willl not expose their company to the possibility that its value could tumble 50% or more in one day due to a rumor, so they look elsewhere for funding.

When will the new unemployment extension start in Kentucky?

they posted the info on the web site today. i never received the "infamous" letter that I've heard so much about.

Can you draw unemployment for reduced work hours Under the stimulus plan?

I'm pretty sure that the "stimulus plan" does not allow that, any more than your state unemployment compensation plan does. Where I live (Ohio) the only change in unemployment compensation has been an extension in benefit periods, and even that has expired.

Another answer:As many state unemployment laws DO provide benefits for reduced hours, it stands to reason that any extensions would follow suit.

What are economics?

Economics is the branch of social science that studies the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services. The term economics comes from the Greek for oikos (h ouse) and nomos (custom or law), hence "rules of the house(hold) Modern Economics developed out of the broader field of political economy in the late 19th century, owing to a desire to use an empirical approach more akin to the physical sciences The subject thus defined involves the study of choices as they are affected by incentives and resources.

Areas of economics may be divided or classified into various types, including: * microeconomics and macroeconomics * positive economics ("what is") and normative economics ("what ought to be") * mainstream economics and heterodox economics * fields and broader categories within economics. source: www.en.wikipedia.org
