This depends on the type and grade of cancer. Some cancers divide and spread quite quickly, others may take quite a bit longer to become clinically significant.

By their very definition, stages of cancer refer to the difficulty in eliminating the tumor(s) from the body. But they are not a hard and fast number; rather, they're an indication of how far the cancer has spread.

Some people diagnosed with Stage 1 cancer never recover; while a lucky few who have reached Stage 4 respond miraculously well to treatment. But in general, your best chance of survival is to catch the disease while its still in stages I or II; anything beyond that will almost certainly require major organ-removal surgery, plus painful follow-up therapies such as radiation and chemo.

If you catch skin cancer early, you have a good chance of surviving. If you let it get worse, you are risking your life. the sooner it is detected the better off you are if you dont detect it in its early stages it can spread and become less and less treatable as time goes on

The vast majority of the time, DNA damage is repaired by specialized repair protiens.

Unrepairable mutation in "junk DNA" areas outside any of the roughly 20 000 genes in the DNA apparently has no effect on functioning the cell.

Unrepairable damage in any one of the roughly 20 000 genes in the DNA often has no effect on the functioning of the cell -- for example, muscle cells normally never produce insulin or hemoglobin or keratin, and so if a mutagen damages a muscle cell in the gene coding for any of those proteins, it has no effect.

Some kinds of DNA damage make it impossible for a cell to divide.

Some kinds of unrepairable damage more or less immediately kill the cell.

In some of these cases, DNA damage is recognized by the cell, and trigger apoptosis -- programmed cell death.

When unrepairable damage hits any part of the DNA that controls the correct timing of replication -- any of the tumor-suppressor genes -- then uncontrolled replication (cancer) can result.

Unfortunately, the DNA in cancer cells cannot be repaired.

The best we can do is try to stop the cancer cells before they cause more problems.

One way to do that is with ionizing radiation.

Stage I: the tumor is confined to the epithelium or has not penetrated through the first layer of muscle in the bowel wall.

Treatment is generally performed with 6 or more cycles of Chemotherapy (one cycle every 2 weeks) followed by three weeks of daily radiation treatments as a "clean-up" of any remaining cancer cells that remain in the internal "scar" from teh tumor. PET Scans show the extent of "high metabolic activity" cells, and are done periodically throughout treatment to show the progress of the treatments. CT Scans show the size and location of the tumors, and are taken progressively through treatment. Surgery to remove Hodgkins Lymphoma tumors is not generally performed. Long story short, untreated Hodgkins Lymphoma can kill.
