Does sperm cause cervical cancer?

Semen itself does not cause cervical cancer, but the answer is a bit more complex than that.

The HPV (Human papilloma virus) can be transferred during sex. About 80% (that means almost all of us) will at some point in life be infected with HPV, but in some cases it cures itself. In other cases the HPV can cause cellular changes which can lead to cervical cancer. Sexually active women should go for a PAP smear every 2 years to detect any changes and to start treatment as early as possible.

This is just one of the reasons why it is extremely important to protect yourself from sexually transmitted diseases. If you catch HIV or get cervical cancer (or any other STD) you will be really sorry you had unsafe sex. One time is enough to ruin your entire life! Remember that abstinence and condoms are the only effective protections from STDs and pregnancy!

It is now possible to get at vaccine to prevent cervical cancer. In Sweden, it is considered so important that it is offered for free to all young women born between 1985 and 1992. It other countries, it is free for all young women.

What is the proper follow-up for a patient with adenocarcinoma of the cervix if the cone biopsy margins aren't clear?

Adenocarcinomas arise from the glandular lining of the endocervical canal. After your biopsy if the margins arent clear, your oncologist would probably want you to have regular pap smears ie: every 3-6 mths. to check to see if there has been any cell changes. The best kind of pap smear to have done is called a "Thin Prep" it is really accurate....though here in Australia, it cost a little more, but worth the expense at the end of the day. If you are concerned as I can imagine you are, contact your doctor and insist on getting some clear information from them....and ask them to explain in a fashion that you can understand. Drs seem to forget, not everyone when to university to learn medicine. Keep your chin up hun! Does cervical cancer surgery affect tubal ligation's?

No. A tubal ligation severes the connection between the ovaries and the uterus. The ovaries float above the outside of the uterus and the fallopian tubes are the only opening into the top of the uterus. The cevix is the mouth of the uterus and is at the bottom of the uterus. The cervix is in the vagina and is not open to the area where the ovaries are.

What is a normal cervical length in the second trimester of pregnancy?

Cervical measurements vary greatly, but a normal second trimester cervix is usually between 3 and 4 cm long (30-40 mm) If your cervix is less than 25 mm in length at 18-22 weeks, you are at higher risk for pre-term labor, pre-term delivery and incompetent cervix. Usually your doctor will recommend serial cervical measurements via transvaginal ultrasound if your cervix is found to be shorter than normal or if you have conditions that put you at higher risk for incompetent cervix and/or pre-term labor. Examples would previous second trimester miscarriage, previous pre-term labor and/or delivery, previous cervical surgery and multiple gestation.

What is the life expectancy of someone with liver cancer?

It depends on several factors, as outlined below.

That depends on how fast the cancer is growing, which is related to the amount of oxygen in the blood. The lower the amount of oxygen, the faster it grows. Cancer cells are the result of a lack of oxygen, the cancer could not occur without it.

Holistic medicine which supports this theory, would tell you to drink a small capful of hydrogen peroxide each day. This would put oxygen in your blood, and has been known to slow the growth, and even kill the cancer. A lack of oxygen in the blood is the result of bad diet. Cancer cannot live in an alkaline body, alkalinity is the result of eating lots of fruit and vegetables.

Is cervical dysplasia curable?

As long as it is caught early, a favorable outcome is highly probable. There are certain categories of atypical pap results, ranked in order from least concerning to most:

Reactive (Simple fungal or bacterial infection)

ASC-US (Could be a low grade, or could be reactive)

Low Grade (A low risk HPV infection)

ASC-H (A possible high risk HPV infection, or could be reactive)

AGCUS (Possible glandular involvement. Not enough evidence)

High Grade (High risk HPV infection)

Carcinoma in Situ (Stage right before cancer)

Squamous Cacinoma or Adenocarcinoma (Cancer of cervix)

It is important to know that many women have atypical pap results ranging from ASC-US to High Grade. Adequate screening for HPV infection via the PAP test and HPV test can greatly reduce the risk of developing cancer.

Symptoms

What are the signs and symptoms of cervical cancer?

SymptomsCervical cancer is difficult to detect in the early stages, since the symptoms are too similar to other ailments, including PMS. For all intents and purposes, early cervical cancer has no symptoms and goes unnoticed by most women unless caught in a pap smear.

The most common symptom of cervical cancer is abnormal vaginal bleeding, especially between periods, after sex, after douching, or after a pelvic exam. Bleeding after menopause is a red flag for cervical cancer.

Symptoms that may occur can include:

- Heavy discharge: Continuous vaginal discharge, which may be pale, watery, pink, brown, bloody, or foul-smelling.

- Pelvic pain

- Urination pain

The first signs of a precancerous lesion are found by a Pap test. Cervical cancer begins with a viral infection. The virus, HPV, infects cells of the cervix, and usually progresses to cancer very slowly. Fortunately only a few types of HPV are considered high risk (HPV type 6,11,18) and even high risk types can be stopped from progressing to cancer if regular exams are given.

Many times cervical cancer has no symptoms until the cancer is more advanced. Even when symptoms are present they are often mistaken for other illnesses.
