I torque the long bolts to 75 foot lbs and the short ones along the bottom to 65ft lbs.If you do not have the proper sequence then go from a circle out from the center of the head. Start off by going snug and going up in 20 lb increments using a torque wrench.

A backfire is when the ignition of fuel doesn't take place in the ignition/combustion chamber, it(a backfire) can take place in the intake or exhaust. It can be caused by a fuel to air ratio not being correct, also if the timing of the spark is not just right that could cause it to back fire. It could be running lean with not enough fuel and too much air, or could have too much fuel and not enough air. It could be because the intake valves are not shut when the combustion takes place, therefore the combustion would take place in the wrong spot. The most likely cause are from: 1. Incorrect timing, the timing issue could be caused by bad wiring/ or bad ignition. 2. Incorrect fuel to air ratio, bad fuel filter, low fuel pressure-caused by weak fuel pump. Most cars will have the same cause for backfiring, as long as it's an internal combustion engine it shouldn't differ...

You can call a GM. dealer and ask for parts. Then ask the parts man if you give him the VIN# will you tell me the gear ratio. And he will.

check your wiring to the motor, if you have a hot lead on it, figure out why.

Torque in sequence to 40 lbs on the first pass.

Then to 70 ft-lbs in sequence.

Final torque is 90-100 all across the board.

235, 6 cylinder, or 265, V-8. The V-8 was introduced in 55, the 265. The 283, I think 55, but only in the Vette. It was not offered in the Bel-air's, until 57.

More than likely 5 quarts with filter change which was the norm for almost all engines of this era. Park the vehicle on a level surface, drain the oil and replace the filter. Add 4.5 quarts and then start the engine and let run for 2 minutes. Shut down and wait 30 minutes. Check the level and add if necessary. I suspect you will find it to be 1/2 quart low.

Its not fun...make sure you have help and an impact wrench...it was awhile ago when I did mine but there are I believe 8 bolts along the outer edge...remove all of those and then remove the 2 screws holding the fuel neck filler to the bed, you will also need to remove the tailgate to help lighten it up a little. Have a couple saw horses with 2x4s to add a little stability set up and 2-4 strong helpers to lift it off and set it on the sawhorses.....2-4 lifters and one to push away the fuel neck away while it's being lifted...good luck and be careful cause the "stepside flares" are plexiglass and fragile!

The dot on crankshaft at 12 o'clock and dot on cam gear at 6 o'clock the centerline of crankshaft, dots on gears, and centerline of camshaft should all be inline.

Try to find an older mechanic that has experience with your brand of carb and knows how to rebuild it properly.

*SS initially stands for the Super Sport model and LT stands for Luxury Touring, and RS stands for Rally Sport, The Z just means it is the most dressed up model you can get, and LS stands for Luxury Sport and has a lot of the same amenities as the LT.

Your ignition wires are probably the original ones from the factory and need replacing. When it rains and the humidity is high, the wires absorb the moisture and ground out, not allowing the spark to get to the spark plug. You can buy wires at Advance Auto or Auto Zone or Pep Boys. Replace them one by one...by length. Careful so you do not crosswire the new wires or the car will misfire. Take your time. It's not a bad job. Jim
