Diabetes

Diabetes is caused when the body does not produce or properly use insulin, a hormone needed to convert sugar, starches, and other foods to energy. Causes are not known, but appear to be both genetic and environmental, with being overweight and not getting exercise being contributing factors. This category is for questions about Diabetes, including Type 1, Type 2, Gestational, and Pre-diabetes, and all questions related to them.

Does diabetes cause itching all over?

That is never "normal" but you are more prone to it.

Vaginal itching and/or yeast infections might be a result of high levels of glucose in your system. High sugar levels get converted into yeast, therefore the increase of yeast in the vagina.

However, before you decide that it is just a side effect of diabetes, you might want to consult a gynecologist and be examined for an std or a non-diabetic related condition.

What are some signs of low blood sugar?

The classical triad of diabetes symptoms is polyuria, polydipsia and polyphagia, which are, respectively, frequent urination; increased thirst and consequent increased fluid intake; and increased appetite.

Type 1 diabetes may also cause a rapid yet significant weight loss (despite normal or even increased eating) and irreducible fatigue. All of these symptoms except weight loss can also manifest in type 2 diabetes in patients whose diabetes is poorly controlled.

Blurred vision is a common complaint leading to a diabetes diagnosis; type 1 should always be suspected in cases of rapid vision change whereas type 2 is generally more gradual, but should still be suspected.

Patients (usually with type 1 diabetes) may also present with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), an extreme state of metabolic dysregulation characterized by the smell of acetone on the patient's breath; a rapid, deep breathing known as Kussmaul breathing; polyuria; nausea; vomiting and abdominal pain; and any of many altered states of consciousness or arousal (such as hostility and mania or, equally, confusion and lethargy). In severe DKA, coma may follow, progressing to death. Diabetic ketoacidosis is a medical emergency and requires hospital admission.

A rarer but equally severe possibility is hyperosmolar nonketotic state, which is more common in type 2 diabetes and is mainly the result of dehydration due to loss of body water. Often, the patient has been drinking extreme amounts of sugar-containing drinks, leading to a vicious circle in regard to the water loss.

How do you keep glucose level constant?

There is a substance in your blood that changes glucose into fat, but if your diabetic your body stops making the substance and so you have to ingect insulin if your type 1 diabetic or your take tablets if your type 2, which converts tne glucose ito fat. I know this because y dad is diabetic =)

Why is it difficult for Type 1 diabetics to lose weight?

When someone has Type 1 Diabetes, there is a balancing act between food, insulin, and exercise in order to keep blood sugar levels within a healthy range (80-120mg/dL).

For a diabetic, when you consume food or drinks that contain carbohydrates or sugar, your blood sugar will rise, and so you will take the appropriate amount of insulin to bring your blood sugar down, or counteract the carbs/sugar that you've consumed.

Exercise will also help to lower blood sugar levels, and so if appropriate measures aren't taken before exercise (such as decreasing the amount of insulin beforehand, or consuming adequate sugar beforehand), blood sugar levels can drop to dangerously low levels (below 70mg/dL). When blood sugar levels drop too low, you may pass out and completely loose consciousness (which can lead to coma or death).

The difficulty in loosing weight: when trying to loose weight, you aim to take in (consume) less calories than you put out (burn). So, a person with Type 1 Diabetes might go for a light jog and burn 200 calories, and then their blood sugar might drop. That person must then consume sugar (15-30 carbs, 60-120 calories) in order to raise their blood sugar level back to a normal range. So net calorie loss for that jog is now less than 200 because they had to drink a juice, for example. This does not occur every time after exercising, however, it is one obstacle Type 1 Diabetics face that those without diabetes don't. Even after successfully loosing weight, a Type 1 Diabetic's sensitivity to insulin may change, so the same amount of insulin taken at the beginning of your weight loss plan may be too much, causing low blood sugars and more calorie consumption before the insulin dosages are corrected.

Even when trying to loose weight by reducing food intake, difficulties can still arise from low blood sugar levels and the need to consume extra sugar, and therefore calories, to bring blood sugar back up.

Overall, it is just difficult to keep blood sugars balanced between food, insulin, and exercise, especially when those three things react differently with each individual. For people with Type 1 Diabetes, there are no formulas to follow for loosing weight and maintaining healthy blood sugar levels at the same time.

When is regular insulin used?

That depends on how it's given (intramuscularly, sub-cutaneously, or intravenously?), the species it's given to (cat? dog? human?), and, of course, the patient's own metabolism. This is definitely a question you should ask your doctor.

Who is more likely to develop diabetes?

Type one diabetes come after a type of viral infection. There is immunological reaction to the viral proteins, which kills your beta cells from the pancreas. There has to be genetic predisposition for such immunological reaction to take place. Such people have the same types of proteins in beta cells, like the ones present in that particular virus.

What are main ingredients in normal recipes that diabetics should not eat?

energy, it affects the whole body

Is diabetes chronic?

it is long term * * This depends on if it is diabetes 1 or type 2 diabetes. Type one is usually long term as there is no cure for it. Type 2 diabetes is usually brought on later in adults by a poor diet and exercise along with other medical factors that can be reversed.

What are causes of high blood sugar?

You are eating too much sugar or lots of carbohydraes which are ultimately broken down into glucose ( sugar). Usually the pancreas is not producing enough insulin and the food choices are demanding too much insulin. Try exercise. It forces the blood sugar into the cells to metabolize the sugar.

There could be many causes for high blood sugar, especially if it is consistently high. It may be due to heredity; or it can be due to stress. It could be due to a consistently poor diet and lack of exercise. If you have high blood sugar, try to eat a balanced diet and get regular exercise. Even a brisk walk will help. If you have a family history of diabetes, you may want to use a nutritional supplement like GlucoVert Blood Sugar Matrix which will provide nutrients that can help sustain healthy glucose levels.

What is diabetic neuropathy?

Diabetic Neuropathy is progressive damage to the capillaries and nerves of the extremities, caused by cumulative effects of hyperglycemia.

It can be prevented or halted using tight glycemic control (A1c 5% or less), and can be reversed in early stages using daily doses of Methylcobalamin, either injected or orally.

Can a diabetic consume sugar?

The answer to this question depends on two things: what kind of sugar, and what kind of diabetes.

If you mean processed sugar, than there's no need to ever eat that, really. You can choose to in moderation (talk to your doctor about the best time of day or circumstance for you), but your body has no need for processed (white) sugar, and it's really not helpful for anyone's body.

If you mean natural sugars, than yes, your body needs them. However, your body can make them just fine from healthier forms of carbohydrates like whole-grains and fiber-rich fruit (eaten again, in moderation).

As for the second question (what kind of diabetes), it matters greatly if you are a type-1 on insulin or a type-2 (who might be diet-controlled, medicine-controlled, or perhaps on insulin to help control). Type-1s really should limit their white-sugar intake to right before exercise. Type-2s should work it into their meal plans.

Diseases of the body?

I wish I could help you with this question, but it isn't really specific. There are thousands of diseases of the body. To name them all would take a long time. If you want to know about the more common ones, use a trusted site with reliable information of disease in the human body.

How is ketoacidsis related to diabetes?
