Yes they can, me and my dad are both Diabetic and he had a severely low blood sugar the other day (31 to be exact) and he would not move, he did not know who he was nor who me or my mom were and he was shouting random things and even things that were not words and was barely coherent and would also refuse any food or drink.

I am very sorry to say that you cannot avoid type one diabetes no matter how hard you try. I blamed myself at first for getting it and my parents blamed themselves too but the nurse assured us that nothing could have prevented it. It is an auto- immune disease. Basically your pancreas produces insulin in the baita cells and insulin is a hormone that lets sugar into your cells so you have energy and the system that fights off colds and flu's and other illnesses mistakes your baita cells for a flu or whatnot and kills it. that is why it cannot, unfortunately, be avoided. I am sorry if you or a loved one have gone through this!

- Severe thirst and high blood pressure (believe it or not, just like how a human being/animal requires a certain level of oxygen in order to live, they also require a certain concentration of glucose: your body is essentially a living battery. Without insulin, the concentration of water to glucose is thrown off: the body will be pumping blood through the veins that is literally as thick as honey/syrup),

- Dizziness/blindness/numbness/fatigue/vomiting/head-ache (with high blood pressure and organs slowly failing, these are some of the symptoms you'll notice on the "surface").

In the end, there is no known animal immune to type 1 diabetes, and no known cure. Again, this disease is neither caused nor can be reversed by diet or exercise, as the problem lies with the autoimmune system.
