Sounds like he might be a bit sick. what king of fish is it and how big is the tank? try taking out 3/4 of the water and putting fresh water in. Go buy some tests to check the water ph, ammonia , nitrites and nitrates and make sure those are ok. Some fish need to be kept in groups or they'll be scared and try to hide. I bought my fish tank on the Sunday and then got home added the water and the aquarium conditioner and left over night so ruffle about 12-15hours and then bought the Goldfish the next day and gradually added water to the bag the fish come in every 5-10mins so they get used to your tank/pond water. the man in the fish shop said to me i should have waited to leave the water in the tank to settle for 4-5days before adding fish but mine are ok so as long as you have made sure you have filters running and have cleaned the tank and added your conditioner to the water, your goldfish should be fine:) don't feed to much, i do mine every other day, but like i would give them couple of pellets now and again they like that

It really depends on the Betta. Like if it's a female or male. If it's a male, you could try snails or an african dwarf frog. But if it's a female Betta you have a little more variety like a second female Betta or a few neon tetras. If dropsy is suspected than you would want to start the fish on antibacterial medicated food soon! Often fish do not recover from a bacterial infection of the swim bladder.
