It realy depends on the fish. I have a 32 gallon and i have tropical fish in it. So for tropical fish it is generly 1-2 inches of fish per gallon. In mine i have 3 zebera dainos,3 platies,1 rainbow shark,1 femail beta,1 glow fish, 1 cherry barb,1 albino Cory cat and, a 4 inch sucker fish. i hope that explains your anser!

I have two beta fish also and i noticed one day there was a bubble nest in the tank. So I went on-line and did research on-line and found out that they do this because they are happy, healthy, and getting ready to mate. They use this nest for their eggs and it is usually under a decoration or near a plant for protection. Try not to move or destroy the nest for they take a long time to make and the fish apparently like it there. They wont keep making the nest if it is removed for my fish went only about a month and stopped making it, so if they stop don't find it a bad thing, for I'm sure the fish is still happy and healthy as ever. But do not mate the beta fish if you are not experienced with it, for beta fish HATE being in the same tank as another for they will try to kill each other. How do I know this? I did research and I sadly have tried it myself.

There are also what is known as community fish. These are your generally more peaceful types such as mollies, guppies, sword tails, tetras, veritas, etc. And remember, just because a type of fish is suppose to act a certain way, does not mean all of them will.

Goldfish, even though they are technically cold-water fish, can do fine at tropical temps. Be careful though, even the smallest species of goldfish you can commonly find needs 10 gallons all to themselves, because they get really big.

The Betta is actually a very good community fish (as long as the aquarium is large enough), and it will get along with most other species of fish. You just cannot put two Betta males together in the same tank. the only thing that really bugs a beta is other fish with big fins, it seem's that they have a complex they need to deal with. Tetras and small catfish like bristlenose and corydoras are good tank mates for fighting fish. also you cant put female betta but you have to check that they don't beat up one another

Another is, when the goldfish get bigger, guppies will be severely harassed or in many fateful encounters. By "fateful" I mean, fish in goldfish's mouth struggling to get out. So please don't mix guppies with goldfish. No matter how nice the tank may look.
