How many eggs do comet goldfish lay?

If it is in an aquarium, then it can happen during any season provided there is a heater in the tank, and your tank water is very clean.

Why is your goldfish chasing your other goldfish during feeding time?

While it's rare, some goldfish can be aggressive and may nip fins. Otherwise males will chase females in the tank if the female is full of eggs. If this is the case, the male will poke his head against her side and her belly to try & get her to release eggs.
If there is one specific fish that is being chased, you may need to separate that fish from the others for it's own health; if there is one specific fish that is constantly chasing the others, then you may need to separate that one from the rest.

Why are fish staying on bottom of tank?

They are possibly down there because the water is too warm in the higher levels or it could simply be that your water is bad and needs changing. My advice is to do a large (80%) water change ASAP then remember to do at least a 50% water change weekly.

What would cause black spots on goldfish?

Ammonia burn is the most common reason for black spots on goldfish, especially those that have been in a tank for about 2-3 weeks but can occur in setups longer than that due to poor water quality and/or lack of regular weekly water changes (about 1/3 each week for a tank 20g or over - any container less than 20gal should have 1/3 changed every 4 days) or if more fish are added. Goldfish are messy eaters meaning they don't always consume everything you feed and they excrete a high amount of ammonia wastes - the combination of uneaten food and high ammonia will cause such high concentrations that is poisonous and will literally burn the gills and skin of the fish. regular water changes (of similar temperature) and a water conditioner such as Prime will heal the fish and maintain optimal water quality.

Fungal/parasitic black spots is not as common but not unheard of, esp from carps, minnows and other cold water fish that were housed or raised in ponds and/or with a large snail population.

Black spots on gold fishIf the black spots are standing up it is fungal. You need to treat for a fungal infection right away. Usually black spots are just an indicator your fish is recovering from an infection and they are signs of healing. Continue with your weekly 1/4 water change outs and don't forget to add aquarium salt. One heaping tablespoon per five gallons.

If it appears fungal increase salinity to 0.3%.

If you do use one of the many different chlorine removing chemicals it is best to read and follow the instructions on the packaging.

Your goldfish has a cloudy eye what should you do?

Cloudy eyes on any kind of fish are warning signs that all is not well in the fishes environment. The cloudiness is usually caused by a form of fungus. This usually happens to fish when their water is foul or going bad. I would advise a very large water change say 70% followed immediately by another water change the of the same volume. Then I would clean out the filter and replace or clean the filter medium. Then I would add 1 teaspoonfull of none iodised (cooking) salt per gallon of water to the aquarium. Then no water changes for about 10 days. This salt concentration should clean up the fungal infection and not damage the fish or plants. The salt concentration will steadilly be reduced as normal 50% weekly water changes are recommenced.

How smart are goldfish?

I guess that would depend on your definition of smart. :) Studies have shown that goldfish and can retain information for up to 3 months (not 30 seconds). Other studies have detailed how goldfish are able to use visual landmarks and cues to navigate mazes, and even remember how to get through those mazes two weeks later. Researchers even reversed, removed and altered the visual cues, with little impact to the fish's performance. There's ample evidence that goldfish are capable of learning tasks and finding multiple ways to achieve one goal. The studies are interesting. :)

Why do fish need oxygen to survive?

Fish extract oxygen from water using gills, but gills cannot extract oxygen from air.

A few species of fish (e.g. lungfish, snakehead) have some ability to extract oxygen from air (e.g. lungfish use a modified swim bladder like a lung) and can survive short trips across dry land from one shallow pool to another.

Your goldfish won't move and it won't go to the surface to eat?

If you can see that the fishes gills are still opening and closing, the fish is still breathing. The most important thing is to change its water ASAP. It may still die if you do change its water from the damage done to its gills by ammonia. The commonest thing that kills fish in captivity is the Ammonia in the water that is produced by the fish living and breathing in the water. That is why fish keepers have a basic set of minimum conditions. They are :- 1 inch of fish needs a minimum of 1 gallon of water, a cycled filter to remove the ammonia produced by aquatic life, and a minimum of 50% water changed weekly to remove the nitrate produced in the filter.

When you get a new tank for your Betta fish do you have to clean it with soap?

  1. Put on a pair of rubber gloves, or wash your hands, then run a large bowl of clean water the same temperature as the water in the tank.
  2. Using a net on a stick (which you can buy from pet shops) gently scoop up your fish and place it in the bowl. Move the bowl away from where the tank is, but not in a different room so you can see if it tries to jump out.
  3. Tip all the dirty water out of the tank and then pour all the little stones at the bottom into a sieve. (You might want to buy another sieve just for cleaning your fish, unless you don't mind eating fish poo whenever you drain pasta.) Run the sieve under cold running water, shaking vigorously so all the stones move round. Try to avoid tipping them all out.
  4. Get any tank ornaments (castles, etc.) and give them a good scrub under hot running water, then put to one side.
  5. Soak a cloth in vinegar quickly, then go round the top inside of the tank with it. This will get rid of all the white mineral deposits, and be assured that vinegar is harmless to fish.
  6. Fill the tank with warm/hot water, then add a quirt of a gentle washing up liquid, and clean all the inside of the tank with a soft cloth or sponge.
  7. Tip out all the water. Make sure all trace of the washing up liquid is gone, then fill the tank back up to the desired level with clean water at the right temperature for your fish, and tip in the cleaned stones.
  8. Spread out the stones evenly at the bottom of the tank, then place the ornaments and plants back in. Now is a good time to put in a water protector thing. These are bottles of liquid that make the water safe for the fish. (important if you live in a hard water area.) Follow the directions on the bottle as to how much to put in.
  9. Get your fish in the net again and tip it back in. My fish is quite old and whenever I return him to the tank after it has been cleaned he sinks to the bottom for a bit, but perks up eventually, so don't worry if your fish does this too.

Hope this helps you =)

What does it mean if your pet fish won't move from the top of its fish tank?

If the fish is still alive, it means that you have very poor water quality and need to change it immediately.
You should be changing at least 50% of the water in a properly stocked tank that is 10 gallons or bigger, and 75% to 100% of the water if you are using under 10 gallons every single week.

What are the different kinds of goldfish?

Cross-breeding can produce nice fry, but in many cases unless you are a breeder, the majority of the fry may not survive due to the amount of cross-breeding that has occurred already to get many of the breeds we see these days.
