What do you do if your fish tank water is hard?

Firstly you need to know what is causing the cloudyness. If your set up is new and filter is large enough for the tank then it may simply be a matter of allowing time for the filter to cycle and the tank to settle. If the tank has been set up for a while maybe you have a bacterial cloud that needs to be sorted out. This could be caused by something dead rotting in the tank or it may be that the power has been off and your filter has gone bad. I would advise you to locate and remove anything that is rotting and clean or replace about 75% of your filter medium and then do a few very large (80%) water changes ASAP. If you get into a routine of changing at least 50% of the tanks water weekly you will find that you have a lot less problems.

What is Tropical fish flakes?

Tropical fish flakes tend to have more/different contents because they are designed to feed several different species of fish that require a varied diet. Goldfish food is designed for just one species of fish. Since there are both Goldfish food and Tropical food available it is common sense to feed the fish the correct and appropriate foods. The answer therefore is they can and may eat them but they are not the right food for them so eventually the fish will suffer.

What is the difference between a male and female comet goldfish?

You should see that the female goldfish appears fatter than usual due to the eggs she is carrying. The male will have white spots on his front fins and gill covers and will pay the female a lot of attention chasing her around the tank or pond.

Also if the female is not pregnant she tends to be a duller color and the male a brighter color because that way the male attracts females and the female wont attract predators when she is protectecting her eggs.

Do goldfish fertilise internally or externally?

When goldfish breed, the male fish chase the females who dash around amongst the plants at the surface of the water. As they do this, the females release their adhesive unfertilized ova (Eggs) and these stick to the plants. The following male goldfish then release their milt (sperm) which is sprayed over and amongst the females ova. This results in the males "milt" comming into contact with the females "ova" resulting in the "external fertilization" of the ova.

What do you need to set up a fish tank?

Salt water is a big responsibility. I suggest fresh water tanks because of the extra time I have available. But if you are sure you want to do this, get online and start pricing the tanks, lighting, filters and other things you will need. Good luck and if you have any questions after you get set up send me a message and I will respond as soon as I can.

Also a little tip is that when you are buying your fish (when the time comes) make sure that you buy fish that will not fight, wont grow too big for your tank. And buy fish that feed on the bottom, the middle and the top, so then your tank will be full and it wont just be all at the bottom, top or middle.

What will happen when cold milk is poured into warm water?

There is a story in history regarding the death of Zachary Taylor - he died after drinking ice-cold milk and eating cherries on a very hot day, and they thought that he died from an inflamed stomach as a result of the really cold milk on a really hot day. I am relatively certain the idea that drinking cold milk on a hot day will kill you stems from this story.

They autopsied Taylor's body and found that he actually died of heat stroke. There is nothing to suggest that cold milk on a hot day is in any way dangerous or detrimental to your health.

How do you train my goldfish to follow my finger or something?

Theres a few ways. Goldfish are more intelligent than most people make out, and they dont have a 3 second memory. You can Get them to eat out your hand, and follow your finger round the tank. Harder things, you can also get them to play fetch, swim through hoops etc (as iv seen) You need to buy a special training pack for that though.

To get it to eat out your hand, when you feed it, make sure you tap/splash the water a little as you put the food in. Make sure every day you put the food in the same place, so it will get used to it, then eventually when you tap the water, it will come up because it thinks theres food, then it will be able to eat out your hand.

TO get it to follow your finger, im not sure. My old one did, you just talk to it a lot and it gets used to you. When it got used to my company, when i walked to one side of the room itd follow me to that side of his tank (: They can hear you beleave it or not, just cant see very well.
You cannot.

Can you use salt water for goldfish?

It is best to not use salt in a goldfish aquarium unless as a treatment for parasites in the tank of a sick fish. The salt damages nitrobacter bacteria that help keep water quality good and causes the fish to produce a thicker slime coat which stresses out the fish thus making them more susceptible to disease.

How many times do you feed the goldfish a day?

It depends on the fish. For young goldfish feed them 2-3 times a day- they need the extra feeding because their small stomachs can only hold so much food at one time which can result in malnutrition. For adult goldfish feeding then 1-2 times a day is fine, and for elderly goldfish feed a goldfish formulated diet once a day and a treat of green peas everyday to every other day to help reduce the risk of becoming constipated.
