Fish don't always swim fast. If the fish is sick then you probably need to do a water change ASAP making sure that the replacement water is the same temperature as the old water to avoid temperature shock which can kill the fish.

There are a few reasons. They could be a pair and mating. They could just be playing. If the one doing the chasing is biting the fins or tail of the other fish, it could be a bully. If the one being chased has no signs of being bitten and is in good health, you have nothing to worry about. If you have a bully, you need to make sure he isn't damaging the other fish. If he is doing damage, he will need to be taken out of the tank.

If your goldfish is lying on its side it may be suffering swim bladder disease. If it is tilted on an angle then you should look at its gills. If the gills are moving then it is alive and if not it is dead. You can also test if it is dead or not by poking it gently on the gills and it should be moving its mouth. If your fish doesn't move its mouth then it is dead. If it is dead DON'T flush it down the toilet because it is really bad try burying it in your backyard. If you do flush it down the toilet it could lead to problems with your toilet or the water system.

There is no exact science to how many fish can be in an aquarium. The general rule is 1 fish per 5 gallons for freshwater. It also depends on how well the upkeep and filtration is, what type of fish, size of the fish when they are full grown. You can put 30 guppies in a 10 gallon but maybe only 3 or 4 small gold fish.

Only fish that are the same species can mate, so I dont' know what you mean by regular fish, but if they aren't the same species as the algae eater, they cannot mate. (That would be like a dog mating with a cat.)

When you are considering keeping a fish without a filter (which really isn't that complicated of a process even for a child) then you are considerably compromising the life span and life quality of these fish, including goldfish who can technically live for awhile without oxygenated water, but not for long. Think of humans as an example. Technically, we can live without extra oxygen, but medical findings reveal that we will not live as long, or as healthy without the added benefits of cardiovascular activities that add oxygen to our cells. The same goes for goldfish, bettas, and guppies. The more you oxygenate them, the stronger and heartier they will be. Needless to say, other fish who only breathe through gills will suffocate without filters and aeration.

Goldfish produce more ammonia than most any other fish, and actually need MORE filtration than other freshwater fish. Also, even bettas should have filters. Even though they are labyrinth fish (air breathing in addition to gills), they still are affected by ammonia, nitrates, and nitrites in your water. There is NO fish that should be kept without a filter. Filters are not only for oxygenation, they are for keeping the water cleaner than simply water changes can accomplish.

Actually the person up there is toattaly wrong.I only have 2 kinds of fish i have 3 calico fantails and 2 goldfish they dont need filters, or air bubblers for that matter .

The contributor above does not have 2 kinds of fish. They are all just goldfish no matter what fancy names they are called. Just because goldfish will survive without filters does not mean they will be doing well or are happy and healthy. Saying "ive dont a ton of reasherch to" Well, I find that very hard to believe.

I'd like to add that a large enough tank with the proper ratio of plants and animals could theoretically be maintained. It would be a monumental task, but it would be possible. The answer is correct in that most fish don't do well in a "bowl."

That being said, thirty some years ago, I made an attempt to breed Betas. At the store I bought a bright red and blue male and a dull brown female and isolated them in a 5 gallon tank. The mating ritual didn't proceed as described in the book, but when I felt the time was right, I removed the tank's glass partition. Before I could respond, the brown fish had the bright blue one shredded and bleeding. He eventually died as a result of the battle and I left the brown fish neglected in the tank.

The water turned green with algae. It evaporated to just a few inches left. After a couple of months, I decided to clean out the tank to use for something else. To my surprise a beautiful bright red, long-finned, male beta had replaced the dull brown one I'd left to die! It loved living in it's swamp!

The last contributor accidentally experienced thirty years ago how Bettas survive in the wild. That capability to survive in an environment not unlike a rice paddy. The use and purpose of the anabantids labyrinth came into play (Bettas can breath air at the surface). It was obviously a young immature fish when it was mistakenly identified as a female. Never-the-less, the basic rules of fishkeeping should still apply. If you want healthy fish and if you want them to live a long life span, you will allow a minimum of 1 gallon of water per inch of fish. You will have a properly cycled filter running permanently and you will also change 25% of the water in the tank every week.

I will agree that most fish readily thrive in a properly stocked, equipped and maintained tank. The purpose of the story was to demonstrate how an inexperienced hobbyist could do everything wrong and still have a fish do well. Further, there is a branch of the hobby that keeps fish in a balanced, natural environment with little or no mechanical aid. All it would take is to educate oneself how to do it and put in the labor and resources. People keep fish for years and years in ponds. Others use a combination of sunlight, plants and fish to keep fish in their homes. The rules outlined above are by far the best method of keeping fish, but are by no means the only way.

There are not many differences that separate koi from goldfish. To name one of the few, koi generally grow to be much bigger than goldfish. koi also can live about 3 times as long as the maximum lifespan of a goldfish.

Not so i had 3 very large Koi snow was melting into pond I put pump in to drain some out & forgot about it Woke up the next day omg all water was gone & my 12' koi were laying on rocks sideways

took me 20 min to hook up hose & 2 of my koi came back the largest one is still on his side iam waiting & praying he comes back My answer would be when they R dormet for the winter it is easier for them to survive

they were laying like that for about 12 hrs

yes because the female will get killed if they fought a male fish. I know someone who has two female Betta fish and they are in the same bowl i thought they would fight as a result they don't fight they play tag and other games.NEVER EVER PUT TWO MALES INTO A FISH BOWL TOGETHER AND NEVER PUT A FEMALE WITH A MALE TOGETHER BECAUSE THEY WILL KILL EACH OTHER.

That depends on how dirty the tank is and what kind of 'dirt' is in the tank. It also depends on what species the fish are and how baby(tiny) they are. If the dirt is algae, then I'd simply scrape it off the glass and syphon the muck out if neccessary. I'd be very carefull that the fry would not be sucked up the syphon tube. If the tank was foul and putrid I'd remove/net or syphon the fish out and strip the tank down for a scrubbing.

Goldfish grow constantly until they die. As far as length of the fish is concerned they commonly grow to 10 or 12 inches but have been known to grow much larger than that. (around 24 inches)

Take it out immediately. Uneaten fish food will decompose rapidly and foul the water. As the decomposes, Ammonia and Nitrite are produced in the aquarium water. These chemicals are deadly to all fish, (some more than others). Also, if your fish is constantly not eating, there is a problem. Most commonly, the water is fouled (that pesky ammonia and nitrite again), or the wrong food is being offered, or the fish is suffering from aggression from other tank mates, or disease, i.e. white spots, red streaks in the fins, white slim covering, red inflammed gills, etc.

Yes, Actually you should because decomposing food is not good. I learned this the hard way, with my fish Easton. He did, sadly die. Maybe because of his food, maybe because of something else. But if you take it out, use a net, not your hands!
