No, goldfish are a type of fish; fish that happen to eat insects.

Fish (goldfish) and insects are both in the Animalia kingdom. From there they split into two different phylum. Goldfish have a backbone and insects do not. Goldfish are in the Chordata phylum and an insect fits into the Arthropoda phylum.

From there, chordates are split up into their class. These classes include amphibians, birds, reptiles, mammals, many classes of fish and a few other classes. The goldfish and 96% of all fish happens to fit the Actinopterygil Class, a ray-finned fish (webs of skin that are supported by bony/horny spines).

The goldfish is then classified by

Order: Cypriniformes

Family: Cyprinidae

Genus: Carrasius

Species: C. auratus

How can you clean a fish tank with baby fish in it?

That depends on how dirty the tank is and what kind of 'dirt' is in the tank. It also depends on what species the fish are and how baby(tiny) they are. If the dirt is algae, then I'd simply scrape it off the glass and syphon the muck out if neccessary. I'd be very carefull that the fry would not be sucked up the syphon tube. If the tank was foul and putrid I'd remove/net or syphon the fish out and strip the tank down for a scrubbing.

What do you do if your betta fish is not eating?

Take it out immediately. Uneaten fish food will decompose rapidly and foul the water. As the decomposes, Ammonia and Nitrite are produced in the aquarium water. These chemicals are deadly to all fish, (some more than others). Also, if your fish is constantly not eating, there is a problem. Most commonly, the water is fouled (that pesky ammonia and nitrite again), or the wrong food is being offered, or the fish is suffering from aggression from other tank mates, or disease, i.e. white spots, red streaks in the fins, white slim covering, red inflammed gills, etc.

Talk to a pro at a full service aquarium store, stay away from chain pet stores at all costs.

Yes, Actually you should because decomposing food is not good. I learned this the hard way, with my fish Easton. He did, sadly die. Maybe because of his food, maybe because of something else. But if you take it out, use a net, not your hands!

Yes, the rate at which a goldfish grows, and its overall size, is often partially determined by its environment. What do you do when your fish is floating but can't swim and is still alive?

It is most likely going to die. I'm sorry to tell you this, but the same thing happened to me just yesterday. My fish was struggling to get upright. We helped her the best we could, but she died hours later. I found it's a disease that affects the swim bladder and digestive system. It could be because you have fed them too much, or they don't have enough room to swim.

Why does your goldfish seem paralyzed?

Well I'm no animal expert but I have had 2 goldfish for the last 5 years (It's record, all my friends ones died after a week or a month) and mine always get still when I change the water, late at night (I guess that's their form of sleep), and when I forget to feed them for day or 2. ;)

The average lifespan of a goldfish is about 10-15 months with improper care. The oldest recorded goldfish lived to be 44 years old but died in 2003.

Some additional factors include whether the fish is moved from one invironment to another....can it survive the change? The typical goldfish lives anywhere between 5 days and 25 years.
Fancy goldfish can reach over 15 years of age, while common goldfish can reach 20-25 years with proper care.
