What does it mean when your goldfish keeps going to the surface?

Goldfish (Carassius auratus) should not have bubbles on their scales. These could be forming because there is a surfeit of air in the water. Given time this air will dissipate and the bubbles will dissappear.

How big is a 5 gallon fish tank?

if its rectangular, often 24" x 12" x 12"

if its a 15 gal tall, often 20" x 10" x 17"

measurements are length x width x height in inches

exact measurements may vary slightly depending on the manufacturer due to glass thickness and whether they measure the inside of the tank or the outside of the tank.

Why doesnt my goldfish move?

Probably because its water is putrid. The basic requirement of all fish is pure, clean water. In order to provide this there are a couple of basic rules that every successfull aquarist lives by. "1 inch of fish needs a minimum of 1 gallon of water. All fish tanks need a cycled filter. All fish tanks need at least 50% water changed weekly. Follow those rules and your fish will swim. My immediate advice is CHANGE THE WATER NOW!!

How often do you feed a fantail goldfish?

I have heard that one fantail goldfish needs at least 20 gallons (91 litres) of water. This seems a little drastic, considering i was planning on getting 5 fantails. This means i would need 455 litres of water, i was planning on getting a 20 gallon tank for 3 fish, but some people think this is cruel. Can someone please tell me about how much water a fantail will need.

Can two male bettas live together?

No. Presuming you mean the fancy Betta splendens, these are highly territorial fish that will chase and harass each other until one dies. Other species of Betta, however, are more peaceful and can cohabit in large aquariums, these wild species are less likely to be found in the average pet shop though.

What are the basic needs of a fish?

The basics: The proper levels of: food, temperature, water chemistry (pH, NO2, NO3, NH3, NH4, KH, GH, etc), light, other things. And possibly: companions, mate, hiding areas, caves, plants, rocks, many other things. Please note that these factors will vary from fish species to fish species, so do your research.

Why would a goldfish stay at the bottom of the tank and barely move?

If you don't have a pair of fish actively and obviously chasing around like mad spawning, whatever it is you are seeing, I can almost certainly guarantee that they won't be eggs.

How much does goldfish food cost?

When I went to the petstore, I saw the cheapest goldfish ever! I suppose they are feeder goldfish. Some comet goldfish are 27 cents per goldfish in one of the PetSmart stores I visited to buy my goldfish a new net! Another goldfish was like 17 cents! Over one hundred of them were squirming inside a 5 gallon tank, all squished against each other, in a tank WAY too small for their amount. In my opinion, I wouldn't buy those goldfish as pets, because of these reasons:

  1. They are cheap, and cheap stuff usually isn't the best quality. Even if you usually don't use a lot of money, it is safer to buy more expensive fish, because they are usually better than 17 cent fish. Don't buy them unless you are using them as feeder goldfish.
  2. They are in terrible, stuffed conditions! I cannot guarantee they will be in great health! I saw a few dead goldfish floating on the top! With mass amounts of fish in a single tank, the people who work at the petstore won't have time to check if all the goldfish are eating properly either!

I think that's all, and I know I went a bit further with your question. So yes, there are lots of very cheap goldfish that are about 17 cents! I hope I have been some help. =)

How long can a goldfish remember something?

A lot of books say 3 seconds, but the truth is...

A goldfish's memory is 11 months long. That is the human equivalent to remembering something for over 40 years. Also, goldfish have been trained to swim through mazes.
Most believe 2 or 3 seconds but it is proven that it is 3 months or so

Look Up comet the gold fish

Proves it is smart

Do Betta fish attack each other?

They actually do bite!!! I don't think they are poisonus so, it should be okay and they have pretty small mouths so I assume it will not hurt so much! You never really know because they eat blood worms and shrimp, but, I think it would be fine. Check with your fish supplier, though- just incase!!! Natalie01

How do you transfer a goldfish from one fish bowl to another?

You will have to strip the tank down to move it. A large waterproof plastic bag is what pet shops provide for fish to be transported in. Another idea is a bucket with a lid. Just remember that they should only be in a small container for as short a time as possible. BTW a 30 ltr tank is not big enough for 2 goldfish to live and grow in. Orandas will grow to around 20cm in a couple of years. The basic rule is 2.5cm of fish needs 4.25lts water. Work it out.

Do goldfish drink water?

Not in the way that most other creatures drink. They, and all freshwater fish, absorb water through their skin in a process called "osmotic action".
No, they are fresh water fish, therefore they simply absorb water through their permeable skin.

Goldfish has a red dot between eyes?

The red dot may be a natural part of its colouring in that case everything is OK, or it may be an erruption (Boil/cyst etc) of some kind under the fishes skin. If that is the case you may be able to buy some kind of medication at a pet shop. Either way I would be advising you to do regular water changes to reduce the chances of sicknes happening.

How do you know how old a fish is?

well, the faster the fish swims can give you a clue on age like fast swimmer young fish!

the size of the fish compare it to an avrage size then you can find out ur fishs age!

Why is your goldfish spitting out his goldfish flakes?

They are obviously not hungry. There can be many reasons for that. The most common reason is the fish are in poor water conditions and they are unhealthy/sick. If you have stuck to the basic rule of 1 inch of fish needs 1 gallon of water and your fish are not overcrowded the next thing to look at is when was the last water change? For fish to remain healthy a 50% water change weekly is a good way to go.

Can goldfish live together?

Yes. They are very social fish and prefer to live in groups rather than alone. If you're planning on getting a goldfish, please get at least two so that each one has a friend to swim around with!

What happens if you overfeed a fantail goldfish?

Yes, The water will get cloudy and your fish will be unhealthy if you overfeed them. Feed the fish how much it can eat in five minutes once a day. you can feed them twice a day as long as you be sure not to go over the five minutes per feeding. Be sure to remove any uneaten food from the tank the best you can.

What breed of fish gets along with the fantail goldfish other than the fantail goldfish?

another gold fish or try asking someone in a pet shop that sells fish maybe they can help

Do goldfish have short term memory?

No Goldfish have longer Memories. In an article, it stated that a pet shop owner needed a way to convince his buyers that making a glodfish swin in such a small place wasn't cruel so he came up with the three second memory span. It is all a myth. many people believe it but it is a myth. -----------

It actually has a memory span of a month. I read this in a book. Don't blame me if it is wrong. This is because a goldfish always recognizes it's owner, knows when it should be fed.

Actually new research Say's that they have a memory span up to 3 months because I just found out

Do goldfish live longer in a tank or in the wild?

Yes, they can live in small ponds.
As feral fish yes, but they are not native to any wild waterways as they are an ornamental, man made, fish species. They were bred from bronze-coloured wild Carassius species of carp (you can still see this bronzing in some "reverted" Goldfish, specifically black ones which go bronze as they get older).

The previous answer mentioned size. Common/Comet (long-bodied) Goldfish are all genetically programmed to get around 10"-12" in length excluding fins. They are strictly pond fish. The shorter bodied Fancy Goldfish get between 5"-10" in body length excluding fins. Fancies need at least 20 US gallons (75 litres) per fish, Commons at least 40 US gallons (150 litres) per fish, preferably more. In ponds the pond must be over 600 US gallons (2,270 litres).

What if your black moor goldfish has one eye bigger than the other?

There could be three explanations that come to mind immediately. Goldfish tend to orientate themselves according to the direction the light is comming from, so the light comming from the side, or not from above, could cause it to 'list". Then there is external damage where the fish has been injured and has damage to its swim bladder. Then last but not least there is bad genetics (inheritance) the fish may have been so inbred that there are genetic faults occurring. There is nothing to be done in the last two instances. Changing the angle of light if that is the problem is the only thing I can suggest.

What happens if a fish aquarium gets too much light?

I very much doubt if any normal light would be brighter than sunlight which is what Bettas evolved to live under. Lights can however be too hot and raise the temperature in the Bettas tank too high for the fish to survive.

Can you buy Betta fish eggs?

Once the fry become free swimmers the adult male needs to be removed before he eats them. The babies will need to be fed very fine/microscopic food. This is available in most good pet shops. As they grow they will need to be moved into larger tanks and their food can slowly get bigger. When they are about 1/2 inch + long some will be starting to show that they are males by their colouring and fin development as well as their behavoiur. These will need to be placed in their own containers to grow on. A successfull spawning could easily produce over 100 males and the same amount of females.

Can a goldfish swim backwards?

Unfortunately, this sounds like "Swim Bladder Disease." Fish have a swim bladder that helps them to float up and down throughout the tank. When there are problems with the swim bladder, the fish will no longer be able to regulate its floating level in the aquarium. Goldfish are the most common fish to have these problems. It happens as a result of goldfish's eating habits. Goldfish will swim up to the top of the tank to eat their food, gulping air while sucking down their food. Unfortunately, this excess air that gets trapped in their stomachs and swim bladders causes the floating problems. Once a fish is showing these symptoms and can no longer stay below the surface, this situation will most likely be fatal. There is also nothing that you can really do. You can, however, make the fish as comfortable as possible by adding a product such as StressCoat to the water to reduce the fish's stress. Now, to try to prevent this from happening again, there is a better way to feed goldfish. Grasp a small pinch of flake food (use flake, not pellets, because the pellets normally can't sink) and hold it under the tank surface to ensure that the flakes are wet. Afterwards, release the flakes below the surface so that the goldfish does not have to come up to the surface to eat. This should help prevent the excess air from entering your fish's stomach and swim bladder.

I've actually had this happen to my goldfish. I took him out and put him in a small, clean coffee cup with fresh distilled water for about 30 mins. I cleaned his tank put him back in and so far he is still alive. Hope this helps.
