Why was it important for US to take control of Hawaii?
Interest in HAWAII began in America as early as the 1820s, when New England missionaries tried in earnest to spread their faith. Since the 1840s, keeping European powers out of Hawaii became a principal foreign policy goal. Americans acquired a true foothold in Hawaii as a result of the SUGAR TRADE. The United States government provided generous terms to Hawaiian sugar growers, and after the Civil War, profits began to swell. A turning point in U.S.-Hawaiian relations occurred in 1890, when Congress approved the MCKINLEY TARIFF, which raised import rates on foreign sugar. Hawaiian sugar planters were now being undersold in the American market, and as a result, a depression swept the islands. The sugar growers, mostly white Americans, knew that if Hawaii were to be ANNEXED by the United States, the tariff problem would naturally disappear. At the same time, the Hawaiian throne was passed to QUEEN LILIUOKALANI, who determined that the root of Hawaii's problems was foreign interference. A great showdown was about to unfold.

Hawaii is part of the United States of America. It became the 50th state in 1959.
Hawaii's history is very complicated to comprehend and the years of propaganda doesn't help. There have been 4 instances where the U.S. has acknowledged this. 1) The Blount Investigation: Where Pres. Cleveland sent James H. Blount to investigate the 1893 overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom. 2) 1988 Legal Opinion entitled "Legal Issues Raised by the Proposed Presidential; Proclamation to Extend the Territorial Sea"
3) 1996 legal opinion entitled Validity of Congressional-Executive Agreements that Substantially Modify the United States' Obligations Under an Existing Treaty"
4) 1993's Apology Bill signed by President Clinton Everyone is made to believe that Hawaii became a part of the U.S., but no one wants to say how that happened. Hawaii was annxed back in 1898 during the Spanish-American War via the Newlands Resolution. But anyone who knows the U.S. Constitution would remember that in Article I, Sec. 8 it states what the House is allowed to do, and how their power is limited to the United States.
Article II, Sec. 2 states that only the President shall have the power to make treaties. How can it be possible then, that a Resolution that came out of the House (created by Congressman Francis Newlands) be a treaty of annexation, something that only the President can make?
In both the 1988 and 1996 Legal Opinion I mentioned above they quesiton how that was possible, yet they had no valid reason why or how. Then the fact that they tried to have a voting back in 1959 to have Hawaii become a state. That too was another thing gone wrong. And the illegalities continue.

In 1959, when Hawaii became a state, the legislature decided to keep many of the symbols that were meaningful to the people who grew up there; thus, since the hibiscus was one of the most popular flowers in Hawaii, it became the official state flower.
