I don't know what your situation is but perhaps you could simply ask to see their papers? Or I think immigration and naturalization papers are filed at state of county level. You could check into this.
Finally, you could check with the INS if you are suspicious. Be forewarned, however, that by doing so you could cause them a lot of legal trouble - like deportation for example...

It is a lot more complex than just getting married. It takes several years and many appointments with the immigration office. There are a lot of factors that go into to play here. I do believe that you must apply from your home now and not if you are already in the USA.
