Well, if the local community included a lot of Muslims, it would help them fulfill their obligation to pray 5 times a day in greater comfort. It also serves as a gathering place. Some mosques also make some of their facilities available to the greater community, though most do not.

But as time has progressed modern technology has come out and imaams usually use the microphone to call the prayer. But although the dome is not needed anymore to project voice, it is still a significant recognisable symbol of a mosque. Although mosques are not built to a certain way or it doesn't say how it should look like, apart some a few points it is build based on how the person wants it to be built Minarets are tall towers which are usually situated around the mosque. The minarets were mostly used to call believers to prayer as it was the highest point of the mosque more people would be able to hear. The mihraab indicates the direction of the kaaba in Mecca in a mosque. This is so that everybody knows what direction they should pray in, as all Muslims pray towards the kaaba. A minbar is where the imaam sits for discussions, because this is at a high stand it emphasizes the contact between the imaam and the audience. When entering a mosque it is vital to have clean clothes on and the body should be washed. Women should be fully covered and men to be covered from the naval and below. also shoes are taken of before entering the prayer hall where men and women pray separately.
