Operetta originally meant a short opera [17th century]. By 19th century it became associated with comic opera or any such like considered less 'serious' than operas. Most operettas can be described as 'light' operas - good examples are the works of Gilbert and Sullivan. Although as with all labels in music, the distinction has become blurred. Basically there is no difference between the scores for an opera and an operetta - except for the operetta's lightness.

There are a huge number of French operas, but few of them receive regular performances these days. They were much more popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries, when operas like Faust, Mignon, Samson et Dalilah and Werther were big sellers. I think they've fallen out of fashion, lost to the visceral appeal of the Italian verismo composers and Mozart.

Verismo (with the meaning reality) was a form of opera that reached its peak influence around the beginning of the 20th century.

1598 - Dafne, libretto by Ottavio Rinuccini, music principally by Jacopo Peri with some assistance from Corsi. It was premiered before a private audience, and received a few repeat performances in the following years. Unfortunately we only know about it through second-hand references; only a few fragments of the music have survived.

1600 - Euridice, libretto also by Rinuccini and music also by Jacopo Peri (with some additions by Giacomo Caccini, who composed his own complete version that was premiered in 1602). This is the oldest surviving example of a complete opera.


1607 - Orfeo, libretto by Alessandro Striggio, music by Claudio Monteverdi. This is subjective, but I think most would agree that this was the first opera to use recitatives, arias, and choruses in an effective manner that gives both variety and formal organization. It is also the earliest opera that is still performed for its own merits, not just for historical interest. Though not the first, it is arguably the true ancestor of the opera as we know it.

Lohengrin is a romantic opera / drama in three acts composed and written by Richard Wagner and premiered 28th Aug 1850. Lohengrin is a character in some German Arthurian literature. He is the son of Parzival [Parsifal another opera by Wagner] and is a knight of the Holy Grail sent in a boat pulled by swans to rescue a maiden who can never ask his identity. His story is a version of the Knight of the Swan legend.

The script from an opera is called "libretto". An opera is the most complete of all musical works in my modest opinion, once require not only the orchestra's performance and the singers and their prepared voices but also their interpretation of the "libretto". So the singers performs like actors in a play which is very often a dramatic history. Listen to Madame Butterfly for example.
