Why did Penn choose the name of Philadelphia?

ANSWER:

The reason William Penn founded (or established) the colony of Pennsylvania, was for a religious refuge for Quakers, and for agriculture. By its charter, which was approved by King Charles II, Pennsylvania (aka "Penn's woods"), was sandwiched between New York and Maryland, extending west of the Delaware River.

The charter gave Penn total authority over the colony, but Penn believed in giving the people a voice. His "Frame of Government," in 1682, established an elected council to furnish advice to the governor and an assembly to pass laws. He also promised complete religious freedom (rather than mere toleration) in the colony.

In all, Pennsylvania had the freest, most democratic political system in the world at that time. Penn also insisted that Pennsylvania Native Americans be treated fairly.

The climate of freedom attracted many immigrants. Quakers were the first arrivals, establishing Philadelphia in 1682, and spreading into the rich farmlands of the Delaware Valley. German "pietists" came next, followed by others who were attracted by the climate and landscape similar to western Germany.

Then came the Scotch-Irish. Some of the Scotch, were Presbyterians. Catholics and Jews from many European countries came to Pennsylvania in search of religious freedom. Later, a small number of Africans were brought to the colony.
Penn hoped to establish a colony where Quakers could practice their religion in freedom. Hope this helped

What is the importance of Philadelphia?

Among many reasons, Pennsylvania was the only colony to live up to its creed of religious tolerance during the colonial era as well as racial and ethnic tolerance relative to its time. Pennsylvania was also the site of most of the "firsts", as one may say, including the first post office in the u.s., the first hospital, the first medical school, the first women's medical school, the first children's hospital, the first true mental hospital, the first zoo, the first mint (where money is made), the first public library, the first organized fire department (though it was volunteer), the first insurance company, the first public water works, the first theatre, the first stock exchange, the first thanksgiving day parade (1920 wanamaker's thanksgiving day parade with floats and all), the first reading of the declaration of independence (for obvious reasons) and the list goes on. Most of these things occurred in philadelphia, which was the hub of colonial America as well as the largest city in the colonies at the time.
