Is acupuncture effective?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes - as long as you are totally honest about your symptoms to your doctor.

Acupuncture has been proven to be more effective than conventional lower back pain treatments in a 2007 study.

A different opinion:

A skilled AP-ist does NOT need to know your symptoms. S/He will use pulse diagnostic, face-, tongue-, and other diagnostic methods to establish what is wrong. If the AP-ist needs to know your your symptoms s/he is NOT a classic therapeut and could be anything with no education.

Be sure your AP-ist is accredited with a recognized organisation as British Acupuncture Council or similar. A minimum of three years study is necessary in addition to a medical education.

A sure sign of not knowing what s/he is doing is the number of needles. FOUR needles is the MAXIMUM (or eight if symmetrical applied). The Yellow Emperor said: "The master uses ONE needle"

The international opinion among medical personnel who is up-to date is that AP works if correctly applied. But it is not a panacea, as many believe. The World Health Organization has a special department for AP!

A different opinion:

Please note that several sites provides anecdotal evidence to prove their remedy effective. In real medical science proper double-blinded results must be presented and similar results must be replicable by other researchers. Anecdotal evidence has a value = 0, and should be read with scepticism. Actually if you want acupuncture to work; ignorance helps. The less know about it, the more you will be ready to accept questionable facts. And if you strongly believe in any placebo, it works!

"The evidence as a whole suggests that the benefits of true acupuncture over sham acupuncture are almost clinically irrelevant," Eric Manheimer, MS

Acupuncture and moxibustion is an external therapy. By means of needling and moxibustion, it can stimulate the body and activate the regulating functions of the body to improve and rectify the disturbance and dysfunction of certain organs in the body. Such a therapy not only can treat disease, but also can prevent disease.

Can acupuncture help ocd patients?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Acupuncture is receiving a great deal of study worldwide. It appears that some claims that, on their face, seem ridiculous, may indeed have some merit. We can find no information that we consider accurate indicating that it can be helpful in cases of mental or emotional disturbances, but it is not understood how it controls pain, either, which is a well-documented fact.

Accupuncture is not an especially expensive procedure, and it is essentially harmless if done by a licensed practitioner under sterile conditions, so we -- personally -- might be inclined to give it a try. We are not recommending it or making promises.

What are the benefits of acupuncture for constipation?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Best cure for constipation is to prevent it from happening. Try chewing your food until it liquefies before swallowing. Digestion start in the mouth by the action of saliva on the food. Avoid drinking liquids when eating because this will alter the PH level of the digestive juices that we need to digest foods completely. Avoid sodas when eating. One thing to remember, if you take liquids when eating, then you're not chewing the food enough. Also avoids unpleasant thoughts when eating. Turn the TV off, set the newspaper aside and play some calming music. Concentrate on the taste of the food, don't criticize it if your eating outside, and don't forget to compliment the chef whether eating outside or at home. Enjoy the food in front of you and don't compare it with the food you ate 2 months ago at another restaurant five hundred miles away. The adage "You don't get ulcers from what you eat, but from what's eating you" also applies to constipation.

If it fails then go to an accupuncturist.

Is bleeding normal in acupuncture?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No, acupuncture does not cause you to bleed.

In some cases though, depending on what part of the body was treated, a small speck of blood may appear after the acupuncturist removes the needle, but which is quickly wiped away with a swab of alcohol cloth by the acupuncturist. This usually is a good sign however, meaning that whichever meridian the needle was interacting with was overly stressed and needed to be relived of pressure.

Source: I went in for acupuncture a few times times for relieving a chronic headache I had at the time, and the only place that had a tiny bit of bleeding was the "third eye," the location between your eyes and above your nose, but actually that needle was the best feeling out of all of them for me and by the time I got home my headache was completely gone and I was in a very nice state of relaxation. I slept great that night and the headache never returned after 3 treatments.

In short: don't worry about discomfort of bleeding, because if there is any it will be minor, and just let the practitioner do their thing and try to relax. It will be a great experience and while I have no idea how acupuncture works, I know that it's effective and that's all the counts!

How do you paralyze some one with pressuer points?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Pinch them -Hard!- On the side of their neck. They will black out for at least 10 minutes.

ANSIt works for Spock on Star Trek but, short of making a person pass out from the pain, there is not a pressure point that will make a person faint. If you go around pinching people on the neck you'll likely run into legal problems.

Applying pressure to the carotid arteries in the neck to restrict blood flow to the brain will obviously cause a person to black out but the act is generally given the term "strangulation" and performing it is usually considered "attempted murder". Jack Bauer can get away with it but you'll probably spend a long time in striped daylight.

What is the mechanism of acupuncture?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Human history is rich and mysterious. In The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine, a Chinese work that dates back to 100 BCE, the emperor and his minister Chhi Po were having a conversation about acupuncture. The emperor tediously questions the minister about the different techniques involving needles and control of the life energy chi, and the minister patiently answers these questions on the basis of the healing traditions that were passed down to him by his ancestors. This magnificent book marks the first mention of the now popular Chinese method, Acupuncture.

Acupuncture is aptly named: Acu meaning needle and puncturemeaning piercing. Like all systems of ancient medicine, acupuncture deals with the belief that the energy in a being is concentrated at specific points- called acupuncture points. This system is also very similar to the chakra system, which also deals with specific chakras or energy rich regions in the body.

But acupuncture is startlingly unique even among other alternative medicine bodies. For starters, it involves a precious understanding of both modern medicine and holistic healing. To be able to predict the areas of imbalance in the body and accurately target those areas with needles- this requires knowledge and extensive practice. Another feat that acupuncture has triumphed in is that it has gained remarkable admiration from the western science community. It has been acknowledged as a full fledged academic course in many universities across the world.

The biggest strength of acupuncture lies in two things: the evolution of acupuncture over the ages, and the intense research done on the acupuncture points and energy balance methods.

Can acupuncture or chiropractors help your migraine headaches?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

ANSWER

Yes. Acupuncture has been shown to greatly relieve migraines and their symptoms. Acupuncture needles are often painless and treatments are very relaxing. Chinese herbs, prescribed by experienced practitioners of Chinese Medicine, can also be very beneficial in reducing and/or eliminating migraines. Because Chinese Medicine seeks to treat the root of an illness, not just to mask symptoms and discomfort, the variety of causes contributing to migraine headaches will be addressed by your acupuncturist.

Chiropractors are excellent at treating headaches by adjusting your spine. Seeing that the spinal cord is the entire length of your back, tailbone to skull, one tiny subluxation can disrupt something (blood flow, nerves) giving you headaches. I also recommend it because my mother and I both had similar problems which a chiropractor had fixed. My mother sees one about twice a year now, and I haven't seen one since I was a teenager.
