Is AP World History better or worse to take than AP Human Geography?
Very few people take AP Human Geo, but those people are generally better prepared for AP World. Only about half of the people who take AP classes their junior year took AP World sophmore year, so those AP World veterans are naturally better equiped to handle those classes.
I took both AP Human Geography and AP World History. Here is an overview of my personal experiences with those classes:
- Neither teacher was particularly good. AP Human Geo tended to go off on wild tangents and AP World was slightly bizarre and assigned way to many unimportant assignments. (Of course, your teachers will be different.)
- AP Human Geography covered a wide variety of concepts. The book was thus rather unorganized and your level of interest and understanding thus widely varied from chapter to chapter.
- The year I took AP Human Geo, the class was only a semester long. That meant a lot more cramming and a much busier schedule.
- AP Human Geo got you used to the basic structure of an AP class, which definitely pays off in AP World.
- AP Human Geo is more big-picture in nature. You need to know more examples but fewer details. A nice vocabulary and the ability to use certain AP World 'buzzwords' can pay off a lot when it comes to the essays.
- AP Human Geo might be more interesting for those interested in women's studies.
- Both classes spend a lot of time on strange religions, although AP Human Geo deals more with Animism.
- AP World is much more centered on Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
- With my busy schedule, AP Human Geo kept me up to at least 1:00 AM every night. AP World was more like 2:00 AM. Take AP Human Geo first and get used to it. This also depends on your schedule, workload, etc.
- You CAN conquer both classes. About the same number of universities accept the AP credit for those two classes.
- AP World spends a lot of time on essay writing.
- The AP exams are about the same length and both are morning exams.
- If you are in AP World, come exam time, you need to be in a study group.
- AP Human Geo is a lot more independent.
- If you are going to take AP Human Geo, take it freshman year.
- The schedule for AP World is a nightmare if you have a lot of extra-curricular activities.
**All in all, both classes required a lot of work. I also aced both classes. I honestly hated them both, but I am better equiped for the rest of my education having taken both. AP World is certainly harder than AP Human Geo, but neither is any laughing matter. And I know AP Human Geo would be easier for me now.
I recommend taking both if you can.
What is a AICE class compared to a AP and IB?
AICE is a course introduced by Cambridge iniversity. AICE classes are sometimes like regular classes, depending on which ones you choose. For example AICE international history is like a regulate history class, but it gives you a AICE credit. In Florida, if you complete 6 AICE classes you may get an AICE diploma and automatically can be chosen for a bright futures scholarship. With AP classes, they are college classes. There are multiple advantages of taking AP classes, the biggest one being: completing college courses and being able to graduate from college earlier. It's also cheaper since you won't have to pay tuition for the courses you already completed. AP is basically like taking "high school credit" classes in middle school. While AICE is kind of an honors type class which also gives college credit. AP and AICE are similar in that they give college credit. AICE also happens to give you a diploma after completing those classes.

What is the history of the foxtrot?
The Foxtrot originated in the summer of 1914 by Vaudeville actor Harry Fox. Born Arthur Carringford in Pomona, California, in 1882, he adopted the stage name of "Fox" after his grandfather.
Harry was thrown on his own resources at the age of fifteen. He joined a circus for a brief tour and he also played professional baseball for a short while. A music publisher liked his voice and hired him to sing songs from the boxes of vaudeville theaters in San Francisco. In 1904 he appeared in a Belvedere Theatre in a comedy entitled "Mr. Frisky of Frisco." After the San Francisco earthquake and the fire of 1906, Harry Fox migrated East and finally stopped in New York.
In early 1914, Fox was appearing in various vaudeville shows in the New York area. In April he teamed up with Yansci Dolly of the famous Dolly Sisters in an act of Hammerstein's. At the same time, the New York Theatre, one of the largest in the World, was being converted into a movie house. As an extra attraction, the theater's management decided to try vaudeville acts between the shows. They selected Harry Fox and his company of "American Beauties" to put on a dancing act. An article in Variety Magazine stated "Harry Fox will appear for a month or longer at a large salary with billing that will occupy the front of the theatre in electrics".
At the same time, the roof of the theatre was converted to a Jardin de Danse, and the Dolly sisters were featured in a nightly revue.
The May 29, 1914 issue of Variety Magazine reported "The debut of Harry Fox as a lone star and act amidst the films of the daily change at the New York Theatre started off with every mark of success. The Dolly Sisters are dancing nightly on the New York Roof. Gold cups will be given away next week to the winners of dance contests on the New York Roof."
The Fox-trot originated in the Jardin de Danse on the roof of the New York Theatre. As part of his act downstairs, Harry Fox was doing trotting steps to ragtime music, and people referred to his dance as "Fox's Trot."
In the rise to fame of the Vernon Castles, exhibition dancers of outstanding talent and charm, there was no doubt that the fox-trot was the most original and exciting of their various dances.
The elite of the dancing world were soon trying to capture the unusual style of movement and when a very talented American, G.K. Anderson came over to London, and with Josephine Bradley won many competitions, he set the seal - so to speak - on the style of the foxtrot.
As a result of the great popularity which ballroom dancing was enjoying, it was necessary to evolve a form of dance that could express the slow syncopated 4/4 rhythm and yet could remain "on the spot." This did not mean that the "traveling" fox-trot was dropped, but the "on the spot" dance did provide a means of enjoying the music in a background which large numbers of people could afford and enjoy, and where various bands were all producing excellent and individual musicians and experimenting with and perfect all of the new sounds and beats from America. The "on the spot" dancing was known appropriately as crush, then rhythm dancing. It is now called "social" dancing and possibly this conveys its purpose and limitations. It would be anti-social to attempt to stride around a ballroom crowded with dancers, to dance with only one partner when out with a party, or to be so engrossed with the performance of figures that any conversation is taboo. It can also create a very good base - should it be desired - for the foxtrot.
The Foxtrot was the most significant development in all of ballroom dancing. The combination of quick and slow steps permits more flexibility and gives much greater dancing pleasure than the one-step and two-step which it has replaced. There is more variety in the fox-trot than in any other dance, and in some ways it is the hardest dance to learn!
Variations of the foxtrot include the Peabody, the Quickstep and Roseland foxtrot. Even dances such as the lindy and the hustle are derived to some extent from the foxtrot.
Our son got into an ivy league school with some b's and one c. There are many factors other than grades, such as the SAT, your outside activities, your interests, etc. If you got a "c" or two you will have to explain them, but is does not immediately disqualify you. Also if you have straight A's (4.0 or 5.0 depending on scale), that also does not guarantee you will get in. Admissions committees also look for intelligence, interpersonal skills, drive, and things you have overcome. If you got pretty good grades and also were into a lot of outside activities, it shows drive and commitment. The fact that you are taking advanced placement classes is outstanding, and a real plus. Summer jobs interning in your area of interest is helpful, but don't sweat your major as more than half of Freshmen change their majors after the first year. Letters of recommendation also are important, as is an interest in contributing to social welfare, government, church or other programs that show you have an interest in helping others. Do some volunteer work, it will make you feel good as well as look good! Most importantly: don't despair if you end up at a State or other school, the average CEO got C's and went to a State school! You can get a GREAT education outside of ivy league. For example, the University of Michigan med school has been rated higher than Hopkins (Harvard) from time to time. You should research your area of interest and see what non-ivys have outstanding programs as plan B.
