Why have your African Violet leaves become white?

If you mean a white substance covering the leaves it's most likely powdery mildew. This can develop due to a lack of air circulation. Put a fan somewhere near the violets to help circulate the air. You could also change the violet's location if possible to improve its environment.

To kill the powdery mildew already on the leaves you can spray a light mist of Lysol onto the leaves. This won't hurt the plant but it will damage any flowers currently open on the violet. You can also wash the leaves carefully in warm water to remove the powdery mildew.

What is the amount of sunlight and water for growing violets?

African violets do not like direct sunlight because the leaves will be burned and unsightly spots will appear. They do need good light from the north or east window. They require 8 to 10 hours a day to bloom well. Give enough water to keep violets moist (not soaking wet) all the time.

Yes, if you place a couple of leaves with stem of about two inches in a glass of water it will root. But if you leave it there to grow for a long time it won't be very strong. If an African Violet has grown crooked from facing the same direction for too long can you prune it down to the base and let it re-grow?

When you cut the top off an African Violet, you throw the bottom away and keep the top! Actually, you can keep both. What I do is select some fat, sturdy top pieces about three inches long (trim off the bottom leaves) and leave them on a piece of paper to air dry for 24 hours.

Then put them into new pots, about one third in the soil (the part where the leaves have been removed). It is safe to water them now. If they have dried properly, they won't rot.

Drape some plastic over them, on sticks or pencils, loosely, with a bit of air allowed in, for a week or so, to keep the leaves from drying out. No direct sunlight until they are well rooted.

Now that you have these new plants as back-up, take a shot at some severe pruning of the main plant. Also trim the roots a little to lessen the shock and keep something of a balance between the top and the roots.
