Alaska has the nickname: The Last Frontier.

Space has the nickname: The Final Frontier (see Star Trek).

By The Last Frontier, it is meant the last area of habitable land on earth that is largely unexplored.

The Ocean is vastly unexplored, but not too habitable for mankind.

Antarctica too is mostly unexplored, but it also is not too habitable for mankind.

The main Trans-Alaska Pipeline runs north to south, almost 800 miles (1,300 km), from the Arctic Ocean at Prudhoe Bay, Alaska to the Gulf of Alaska at Valdez, Alaska.

There is no continent north of Alaska*. But, if you kept going north, you would cross the border from going north to south, or vice versa. Then you would be going south, and hit Asia.

*Arctica (North Pole) is not a continent

1845 was a very eventful year for Alaska.

Firstly, Cotton P. Johnson was born. Johnson went on to become the inventor of the waffle iron and was killed in 1901 for his crimes against humanity (waffle irons are really really lame).

Secondly, 1845 was the year of the Great Penguin-Hurling Tournament where hundreds of athletes from all over Alaska gathered to determine who could hurl the greatest number of penguins into the sea in ten minutes. Unfortunately, the tournament was cut short by the discovery that there were no penguins in Alaska.

Finally, 1845 was the year of the first ever Alaska's Got Talent. The competition was won by the Manly Man's Marching Band, who went on to become a hit sensation in the USA, Canada and Greenland, before sinking into obscurity after all record of their existence was erased by crazed fans of the rival group the Jiminy Crocketts.

The Big Dipper is a pattern of stars (asterism) that is easily located when viewing the night sky. The seven brightest stars in Ursa Major and form the hind quarter and tail of the symbolic Great Bear which has long been a Native American symbol for Alaska.
