Breastfeeding and alcohol?

Rachel, some doctors say that if you drink small amounts of alcohol in moderation and not too often, you and you're baby will be fine. But just recently I learned quite a bit of information about Fetal Alcohol Syndrome - and if there was ANY chance ... even a .000000001% chance it could harm my baby, after seeing what could happen, I wouldn't so much as take a sip. Of course, some women drink their entire pregnancy and their babies turn out fine. I just wouldn't want to be the woman who had to sit and wonder if my baby would be born without the bridge to its nose, or very short fingers, or missing a few toes or fingers, just because I had a few drinks during the time those things were developing. By the way, a 12 oz. beer and a 4 oz. glass of wine is the same thing as a 12 oz. shot of liquor. Protect your baby. Don't drink. If you're craving beer or wine, which many pregnant women report, try non-alcoholic beer or <a style='text-decoration: none; border-bottom: 3px double;' href="http://www.serverlogic3.com/lm/rtl3.asp?si=22&k=non%20alcoholic%20wine" onmouseover="window.status='non-alcoholic wine'; return true;" onmouseout="window.status=''; return true;">non-alcoholic wine</a>. I know it may not taste as great, but it will taste similar and may help to feed the craving the safe way. Hope this helped!

THE OLD SCHOOL of thought was a few drinks were O.K. NOW, they see problems for the child with small amounts of alcohol. DON'T DRINK ANY ALCOHOL WHILE PREGNANT<<<ADR>>>

How high is 1.7 blood alcohol level?

Not 2.7, no. A person would die before reaching a blood alcohol level (BAC) that high. Perhaps you mean .27, which is considered very high, but not uncommon. Alcoholics frequently register BACs of at least .27, simply because their bodies have habituated to alcohol, and they are able to consume more than light-to-moderate drinkers. Most people would be "falling down" drunk or unconscious at .27.

The following list of facts is from the Drug Abuse Recognition site (Related Links):

  • 0.03 BAC - Slowed reaction time.
  • 0.04 BAC - Federal prohibited limit for commercial drivers license.
  • 0.05 BAC - Increased risk taking and American Medical Association recommended prohibited limit.
  • 0.08 BAC - Recommended prohibited limit for criminal charges and impaired vision.
  • 0.10 BAC - Poor large muscle control, loss of balance, and prohibited limit in most states.
  • 0.17 BAC - National average blood alcohol level of drivers in a fatal crash.
  • 0.19 BAC - National average for first time DUI offender and of persons who have killed police officers.
  • 0.20 BAC - Loss of emotional control.
  • 0.22 BAC - National average for replete DUI offenders at time of arrest.
  • 0.30 BAC - Loss of orientation as to time and place,.
  • 0.35 BAC - Blackouts and stupor.
  • 0.50 BAC - Published overdose level leading to death.
  • 0.74 BAC - Highest recorded blood alcohol level by a US hospital.

How much alcohol can people drink?

I am a 40yr old female in good physical health. I typically drink 3-4 glasses of white wine a day. I felt fine about this amount until I did some searching on the internet and found that the CDC and several other agencies label that as "heavy drinking" in a woman. I have talked to many people, and it seems like many people drink 1/2 a bottle of wine a day. I don't know who to believe...the general population or the CDC. :(

What is the first part of the body affected by alcohol?

Drinking alcohol in moderation reduces the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases by an average of 40%. Such consumption, especially done on a regular basis, improves blood profile and helps the circulatory system operate more easily and efficiently. In addition, moderate drinking increases the survivability of heart attacks.

When heavily abused over a period of many years, alcohol increases the risk of damaging the liver.

The main two organs affected when consuming alcohol is the heart and liver. The alcohol, when drunk, enters your bloodstream, therefore slowing down the heart. It then begins to pump blood slower. The liver works to break down the alcohol. If too much alcohol is consumed, the liver is overworked and may result in internal organ damage.

Alcohol begins to affect you after it enters your body?

As the Alcohol is consumed by the Drinker, it flows down the throat and into the Stomach. From there it either is absorbed by the walls of the stomach or it goes to the small intestines (most likely). Then, the alcohol is absorbed by the intestines and goes into the bloodstream. It goes directly to the heart, where it is then pumped around to the whole body. It reaches the Brain and sends it damaging messages, then takes a path down to the Liver. From the Liver, it is processed and oxidated (burned up). The Body can only process 1/2 Ounces of Alcohol each hour. Alcohol is very dangerous for the whole body in many ways and is a harm to society.

Why does wine make you more drunk?

Wine does not actually make you more "drunk" than another drink - it is just usually most don't realize how much alcohol is in the average drink of "wine." Most wines have an alcohol content of 9-14% alcohol by volume. Compare that to only 5% for beer. It's 2 to 3 times as much alcohol, so the same volume of liquid would make you 2-3 times "more drunk."

What are the critical signs and symptoms of alcohol poisoning?

Symptoms of Alcohol Poisoning are, Depressed (slow to none) Breathing, Confusion, Coma, Vomiting, Gastrointestinal pain, and ultimately death is a symptom.

There are several symptoms of alcohol poisoning. A few of the symptoms are vomiting, confusion, slow breathing, low body temperatures, and pale skin.

Usually unconsciousness is the primary symptom but there can be nausea ,flushing of the skin or very pale dry skin. Anyone exhibiting these symptoms should be hospitalized immediately. Alcohol poisoning can be and very often, is fatal.

Symptoms By Mayo Clinic staff

If you drink, have friends who drink or have children of any age, know the signs and symptoms of alcohol poisoning:

  • Confusion, stupor
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Slow breathing (less than eight breaths a minute)
  • Irregular breathing
  • Blue-tinged skin or pale skin
  • Low body temperature (hypothermia)
  • Unconsciousness ("passing out")

It's not necessary for all of these symptoms to be present before you seek help. A person who is unconscious or can't be roused is at risk of dying.

Alcohol poisoning can lead to death. Therefore people should call 911 if a person ever has any of these symptoms:

  • is unconscious or semiconscious
  • is breathing fewer than ten tomes per minute or is breathing irregularly
  • is cold, clammy, pale or has bluish skin
  • cannot be awakened by pinching, prodding or shouting, or
  • is vomiting without waking up.

Any intoxication always carries a degree of risk. People who choose to drink should always do so in moderation.

What should you do if someone has alcohol poisoning?

you sue the babysitter that drugged the bottle. Nahh...the question is why would anyone even own poison and keep it in the reach of a baby? Get them to a doctor pronto.

How long does it take for alcohol to leave your blood?

The length of time after you finish drinking alcohol that it will still be in your system depends on how much you drank and the period of time in consideration. Generally speaking, people metabolize alcohol at the rate of 1/2 ounce per hour (that's half an ounce of absolute alcohol -- or one "standard" drink) -- roughly equivalent to: 12 ounces of beer, 10 ounces of microbrew, 6 ounces of wine cooler (or hard lemonade), 1-1/4 ounces of 80-proof liquor or 4 ounces of wine. Therefore, if you consume three standard drinks -- regardless of how long it took you to drink them -- it would take you three hours to be completely free of alcohol. This should hopefully make it apparent that alcohol builds up in your body over time because the liver can only metabolize one an hour. That's why it is dangerous for people to "chug" alcohol or play drinking games. If you consume large quantities of alcohol in a short period of time, you can quickly get a toxic or lethal dose in your blood stream. Unfortunately, once it is absorbed from the gut (which occurs relatively quickly), there's nothing you can do to "get rid" of the alcohol except wait for it to be metabolized by the liver.

Does the liver absorb alcohol?

When you drink beer, the alcohol that initially enters your body needs to be broken down. This breaking down of the alcohol is done in the liver, which then distributes it into the blood stream. A drink every now and then is not going to be much of a problem, but if you abuse the alcohol, you can cause permanent damage to the liver and scarring. Alcohol abuse also leads to liver and/or colon cancer.

How much alcohol is there in 7 up?

Usually 0.3 - 0.5% not anywhere near enough for a person to feel intoxicated. Even if you drink 20 12oz cans, you will expel it faster than you can get drunk off it. Alcohol occurs naturally in sugary drinks as a process of the sugar being broken down.

Now as for sugar free drinks such as 7up it is added as a substitute to sugar as a sweetener. Again it is not possible to get drunk of this, and actually beneficial to ingest low amounts of alcohol as an antioxidant and its good for the circulatory system. Although, both those benefits are negated by the sugar, caffeine and other ingredients, few of which are any good.

Why do smaller people get drunk easier than taller people?

Alcohol is just like any other drug it's effects are determined by a person's amount of consumption and their body weight. Most girls weigh less than guys. A person's tolerance plays an important factor also. It may take a regular drinker more than one drink to get drunk while it may take a person who hardly ever drinks only one drink to feel the effects of the alcohol.

What is the best alcohol for the liver?

This depends on what your asking, if its what are the worst tasting? then that is a matter of taste, my personal belief is that Everclear is the worst, along with expensive tequila, however if you mean which are the worst on the body.... then mixed drinks are the worst, they cause a far worse hangover, and are far more potent. However moonshine vodka is also very bad for you causing blindness in large quantities.
