Can you put a polarized plug on an S38E Hallicrafters and minimize the shock hazard?

Original Answer: Yes, the wide blade of the polarized plug would connect to the chassis of the radio. Another solution to the potential shock hazard would be to use an isolation transformer between the radio power plug and the power outlet. Correct Answer - NOT YET! Depending on which wire you choose to be the 'wide', or 'Neutral' blade, the chassis will either be 1) hot all the time, until switched on, or: 2) hot when switched on. Hallicrafters put the switch near the chassis ground because they felt this would remove 'hum' from the audio. Unfortunately it creates a hazardous situation that is only mitigated by having the chassis electrically separated from the cabinet by plastic spacers. If these plastic spacers fail, the cabinet could become hot.

To correct this, one needs to go inside the radio and SWAP where the 'on' switch: moving the 'newly polarized Neutral to the spot where the switch currently goes; then take the switch and move it between the newly polarized HOT line and where the old wire went. All that is needed is a soldering iron and possibly an additional few inches of 18-ga wire. For a pictorial view of what takes place, see: http://mikeyancey.com/S-38B_refurb.php

How do you increase the power output of the Kenwood TS-440S Ham radio?

Not enough information to give a simple answer.. however, a Kenwood TS-440S or S/AT either one should put out about 100-110 watts of RF power. The best way to determine this is to transmit a CW tone into a dummy load and read the power out on a known "good" wattmeter. If you are seeing about 100 watts, you are doing good!

There are no tweeks to actually get the power up inside the radio, and any that you try will over drive the solid state finals and they will burn up.

Some new hams think that since 100w is good, 125w or 150w has got to be better, however in reality, and from my experience it does take about 500w to get at least 1 S unit better on the receiving station. That said, trying to get over 100w on a radio that is designed to only do 100w it both fruitless and risky for the circuits.

If you are not getting 100w (up to 90w is good enough), but are much less, say 75w, you may want to find a repair facility that can examine the rig for repairs.

If you really need more power (QRO), I suggest running an RF amplifier using the TS-440S as the exciter, or driver.

Good luck,

Andrew

What is amateur radio?

Amateur radio or ham radio as it is also known is two-way radio transmissions which are sent by voice, Morse code, or even by computers. You need a license to transmit on the amateur bands (radio frequencies) which are controlled by government departments and various radio organizations throughout the world. There are hundreds of web sites with additional information and how to obtaining a license in most countries. like you can say in USA the Stryker radios are top in the market of amateur radios.

Bandwidth vs frequency?

Bandwidth is the amount of information that can come through. The frequency is how quickly the information can come through.

What is the best internet radio?

Maybe you actually meant Internet radio, as in device. Pandora is an internet radio service, and is one in 10,000 or more through the world. I do use Pandora, and have a paid account on Pandora, however, the internet radio I use to do this is made by Grace Digital, and is called a Mondo. The Mondo will take the place of your radio clock alarm, and wake you to your favorite internet radio station each morning. In fact, you can set an individual alarm for each day and set each day to wake you on a different station. I get no alarm on weekends.

While Mondo is my favorite internet radio for everyday use, it also has RCA type outputs on the back so it can be routed through your home stereo system and be heard in a much bigger way.

My favorite Internet radio for exploring internet radio stations is the Aluratek AIRMMO1F. I once wrote a review of that on Cnet. It is what I refer to as a Internet radio that operates like a Ham radio station. There is an ocean of radio stations, and that radio will let you browse them all day and all night, and you still will not be able to listen to them all. It lets you browse by country, genera, state, and so on. I have picked up everything form Police scanners in Las Vegas, to talk shows on stock investing, also 24/7/365 Christmas music. The strangest station I ever found was a station that played every Rudolph the red nosed reindeer song, recorded by everyone who ever recorded it, 24/7/365, and nothing else. So I highly recommend a radio like that for the person who has a wide open mind, and wants to experience as many new things as possible. Like me.

There are many more Internet radio's out there, but the most popular are made by Grace Digital, and Logitech. If you follow the masses and by a Logitech, you will pay the most, but may not get the most. There was room for two to satisfy my desires in internet radio, and I believe I have two of the very best.
