9 years ago I had a terrible 'flew' I believe. My wife bought Robitussin for me. I had been taking 10mg of Ambien every night 4 about 4 years. this night I took 2 table spoons of Robitussin and then the 10mg of Ambien. I went through a long black-out period with a few seconds or spurts of memory over the next 2 or so hours. Unknown to me, I had cussed out my with, which I had never done in the past, driven my car around the block and hit 10 cars parked in the street, totaling out my car. The police found me walking towards trafic on a busy street next to my house. I was arrested and charged with Driving While Under The Influence Of Prescription Drugs (DUI).

Several thousand dollars later I was found guilty. I discovered that after the normal dose of Robitussin and Ambien, that I had taken several more Ambien and several Hydrocodone tablets. I have no memory of this and had never abused drugs before or since (It has been 9 years ago.)

I am alcoholic and have been totaly dry for 30 years. 21 years at the time. I have always wondered why I was affected so strongly. One suspicion is that my being alcoholic might have something to do with it. I had several similar black-out periods back when I drank alcohol.

I would like to find out more if anyone knows anything about this.

PS About a year after my arrest, my comviction was overturned on appeal by a technicality having nothing to do with my guilt or innocence.

My personal experience tells me that this is something that you should speak to your doctor about. I had to stop taking ambien while taking wellbutrin because of serious side effects. If you take 30 mg. Ambien and you never have before, you may have two problems; the first is that if youv'e never taken Ambien before, the normal dose is 10 mg. So if you decided to triple the dose right away, you would likely get very sleepy, very fast. The 2nd thing that might occur, especially if you have never taken this medication before or you take this dose with a mixed stomach (ie other medications or alcohol). The best case scenario is you would fall asleep very quickly, and sleep solidly through the night, and upon a waking maybe having a slight hang over from the meds. The 2nd and not so good scenario is this: you take 30mg all at once you go to bed with a hopefully empty stomach (meaning you havent taking any other drugs that might interact with the ambien and make you even sleepier, this includes any alcohol.) As your breathing slows, so does your heart. Over the next few hours you are asleep your heart slows down so much that it cant get blood ti your brain or organs. At this poin the diaphragm would also stop working and when this happens the lungs can no long inflate and deflate. This means your lungs are no longer providing oxygen to your body or brain. Once this happens,all organs cease to function and the person would die. This is especially true if you are taking ambien by snuffing it, or injecting it. It is a miracle drug when it comes to helping a person fall asleep. But, like anything it has to be taken appropriately, or even the most benign drug can be fatal, Ambien can be given as a prescription up to 30mg. But that has to be determined by the Dr. The Dr will take into consideration if you are on any other meds and how much you drink, Hell also take into consideration how tolerant or intolerant you are to the specific medication. 30 mg is a high dose, but it is used for people with extreme insomnia and anxiety. I just have to say that if you are using this medication responsably, it is neither difficult to detox from (as it is not technically habit forming), or habit forming, if taken in the proper way. 10-30mg at bedtime every night, does not a drug addict make. This is a very simple drug to stop using if it is being used correctly. The person who said it took years from their lives, I have to believe that she was not using it correctly and was more than likely either shooting it up or snorting it up her nose. This is not what this med was to be used for, so coming in and telling, and possibly scaring people away from a very good, helpful drug, just because you did not know how to use it properly doesnt mean that the rest of us who follow the instructions to the t should be told to stay away from something that for many people is their savior so they can fall asleep.
