What types of anxiety medications are there?

There are so many medication out there to treat anxiety. In my opinion practicing in the Psych field is a shot in the dark. You try one medication and it may work or the patient may not be able to tolerate it. It usually takes about 6 months for bipolar patients to get the right cocktail. Meds are administered depending on the severity of your condition. Some patients just take a tranquilizer, others take an antidepressant and a tranquilizer. You just have to find what works for you.

Tranquilizers: Klonopin, Ativan, Xanax, Valium

Anti Depressants: Zoloft, Prozac, Paxil, Wellbutrin

I've only listed a few in each category. There has been much success with the SSRI Anti Depressants the only downside is you don't feel the full therapeutic effect for about 8 weeks. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is also recommended again depending on the severity of your condition. You learn how to breath through the panic attacks/anxiety, triggers, and how to manage stress.

How can I fix my depression anxiety stress and frustration?

Do something that can make you happy..

Something like jogging..

Listen to calm, soft and relaxing music. Try to meditate or do yoga to let your body de - stress and let your emotions run free. You can also try writing in a journal about what you are feeling, that will help get your problem off your shoulders. Sleeping can also help, giving your mind and body to rest, but if the situation is serious try speaking to a close friend or trusted relative or even a local counsellor or psychologist.

Just relax and DONT think about it the whole day, whatever problem your having. Think of exciting things coming up, maybe a holiday, or birthday. If the stress coems back push it away and think of other things. Then once you've done that for a day, sleep through it, take some breaks if stress ever comes back. But sleep really helps so make sure your getting enough of it!

What phobia is for fear of knowing the truth?

I haven't seen referenced any specific name for "fear/phobia of reality". However, the good news is no one stops you from "inventing" it, the way the other phobias' names (and many, many other words) were invented.

The most common way of naming a phobia is to use the Greek word naming the object of that phobia and the -phobia suffix.

Greek for reality being πραγματικότητα(transliterated pragmatikoteta), and for real, πραγματική (transliterated pragmatike), you can safely use pragmatophobia to name the "fear of reality".

As an alternative, the Latin words for the object of the "fear" have been used...

From that point of view, you could use realitophobia (coming from the Medieval Latin word realitas, initially a juridic term for "real estate", derived from the Latin word res, a generic term roughly equivalent to "thing/things"). But that sounds a little too "plain" if you ask me. LE: Ups, I just found out the word "pragmatophobia" was used by the Polish philosopher Zygmund Zawirski in the very title of one of his books, Symbolomania and Pragmatophobia. And, as a personal note: I took "fear of reality" not in the sense of actual fear/terror (like arachnophobia, the fear of spiders, for instance), but to mean the denial of reality, hiding from it, the unwillingness to acknowledge certain aspects pertaining to reality.

What are the natural ways for treating anxiety?

There are many natural approaches to treating anxiety, including herbal medicines, and lifestyle approaches, including exercises, activities like meditation or journaling, types of therapy, and changes to your diet.

Some key approaches to diet that show some evidence of treating anxiety are improving consumption of omega 3 fats, such as occur in fatty fish and wild or grass-fed meats, and reducing ones intake of sugar and processed foods.

Herbal medicines, like prescription drugs, do not treat the underlying cause. Some common herbal teas are helpful for treating anxiety, however, including chamomile tea, tulsi (also known as holy basil tea), lemon balm, and passionflower. Other herbs which show some evidence of helping reduce anxiety include common sage, pineapple sage, and lavender. Herbs tend to be less potent, but much safer, when compared to prescription medications.

How can people stop cutting themselves?

I understand that cutting is a habit that is almost impossible to resist. As a ex-cutter, I know it feels like all your hurt, and sadness is pouring out of you. I know it feels better afterwards, but you shouldn't harm yourself to get to the happiness. People will eventually find out, and you can get arrested for, 'self-harm' or 'atempted suicide'. And what for? Yes, you may have problems in your life, turn to God, that's what I did. He'll forgive you for doing it, and He's always there for you. Another thing you can do (this works well, too!) Is turning up some music, and writing down all your emotions, and how you feel... you will most likely cry during this, but you shred up the paper and do wahtever you like to it- punch it, claw it, etc. You can do many things other than cutting such as- yoga, drawing, poetry, horseback riding, writing, singing them, learning to play guitar(or any other instrument). If you need more, you can send me a message.

lovestinks_248@gmail.com

well hi. this must be hard, i get that but listen up, okay? You want to be a ex cutter, that is great you just took that first step. Next get a loose rubber band and put it on your wrist. When you need to cut just pick up the rubber band and let go, it will help Now get a dairy or something like that and write your feelings and such it and maybe after that talk to a friend so they can help you. Next, find out what u love: write songs, play an instrument, draw, etc. After that talk to some one and eventually you will become a ex cutter

What foods raise serotonin levels?

1 Food sources that help with serotonin production - foods high in B-vitamins (brown rice, chicken, corn ,eggs, green leafs, legumes, meat, nuts, peas, sunflower seeds, nutritional yeast), Calcium (almonds, brewer's yeast, green leafs and cruciferous vegetables, fish with bones, sesame seeds, tofu), Magnesium (green leafs, brown rice, sesame seeds, shrimp, salmon) and Tryptophan (turkey, soy foods, peanuts, almonds).

2 Essential fatty acids necessary for serotonin production are the omega 3's (fish oils found in mackerel, salmon, sardine, tuna; walnut oil, flax oil) and 6's (canola oil, chicken, eggs, flax, grape seed oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, turkey, wheat germ oil) as well as Gamma-Linolenic Acid (black current oil, bluegreen algae, borage oil, evening primrose oil). I've also read that most people have an excess of omega 6's and need to decrease the amount of 6's in their diet in order for the 3's to function well. I guess most of us are lacking in 3's.

3 Long-term stress depletes serotonin levels. Short term stress actually increases serotonin, but after time you get burn-out and it becomes increasingly difficult for the body to produce serotonin. So reduce stress--this can be as simple as adding exercise and meditation to the daily routine or as life changing as choosing to leave a really stressful job.

4-Avoid stimulants because they deplete serotonin over time--this works the same was stress does. We're talking things like caffeine, refined carbohydrates, chocolate, sugar as well as the heavier stimulants like cold remedies, alcohol, street drugs, diet pills and tobacco.

Neurotransmitters Serotonin

Serotonin is similar to catecholamines. It is made from the amino acid, tryptophan. Serotonin is converted to melatonin in the pineal gland. Tryptophan, derived from food, is transported to the brain to make the neurotransmitter serotonin. At the appropriate place inside a brain cell, two enzymes and vitamin B6 transform tryptophan to serotonin. Serotonin is then transferred to the sending end of the neuron (the terminal bouton of the axon), where it is used as a molecular messenger to carry information across the synapse to the receiving neuron. ...

Serotonin production is sensitive to the supply of tryptophan in the diet. The effects of serotonin were first observed in the digestive tract where it causes contractions of the smooth muscle. Serotonin is released from blood platelets and elevates blood pressure. Serotonin circuits arise from the brain stem arousal complex and reach into all areas of the brain. Increased serotonin circuit activity tends to activate abnormal behaviors. Too little serotonin is associated with sleep disturbances, loss of appetite and depression. Some antidepressant drugs increase serotonin activity and these drugs tend to decrease appetite.

Serotonin itself isn't in food. It's a neurotransmitter released into the synapse and bloodstream. However, certain foods cause serotonin to be released like candy, cereal and pasta. Anything with plenty of carbohydrates will increase serotonin levels. However, the effects won't last long, maybe only 2-3 hours.

Please don't discount chocolate in an emergency , especially for women .I don't drink alcohol, but chocolate cheers me up niceely.

Can a person with mental illness become a nurse?

(No You can not be a nurse if you are being treated for a mental illness... But you can be a health care worker though like a pharmacy tech, medical coder or something like that. But not a nurse.... )

comments by Erica RN

I am shocked. This answer is fully wrong- on so many levels. You can be a nurse and have a mental illness. The key is BEING TREATED. Of course, your symptoms need to be well controlled, and you would have to be cleared by your psychiatrist when hired as a nurse, but it is ILLEGAL to discriminate against a person with a mental illness. Nursing schools included. Many schizophrenics, with effective treatment, are fully functional contributors to society. There was a schizophrenic Nobel prize winner, many nurses, doctors, teachers, lawyers, etc... There are different forms of schizophrenia, with varying effects, and some forms even have periods of complete remission. The degree to which schizophrenia affects a person varies greatly.

And by the way, when a pharmacy tech makes a mistake... they are just as likely to kill someone as a nurse is. Don't underestimate the skill it takes to do that job!!
