How many people are diagnosed with panic attacks each year?

According the downloadable brochure published by the National Institute of Mental Health, question #3, "In any year, 2.4 million Americans have panic disorder."

from Gulli, Laith Farid and Bilal Nasser. "Panic Disorder." Gale Encyclopedia of Genetic Disorders. Ed. Brigham Narins. Vol. 2. 2nd ed. Detroit: Gale, 2005. 985-988.

Panic disorder definitely runs in families and twin studies suggest that about 20% of patients who have the criteria for diagnosis have first-degree relatives with the disorder. In families with no history of affected first-degree relatives the prevalence decreases to 4%. The ratio between monozygotic twins (identical) to dizygotic (non-identical) twins is 5:1 for PD. Recent evidence suggests that there is a genetic mutation in the SLC6A4 gene. This gene is related to a brain chemical called serotonin, a chemical in the brain, which is known to effect mood. If the transport of serotonin is imbalanced then certain parts of the brain may not receive the correct stimulus causing alterations in mood. Some studies have demonstrated that there is no positive family history in about 50% of patients diagnosed with PD. Other possible causes of PD include social learning and autonomic responsivity (the attack will affect the body and hypersensitizes nerve cells in the brain). PD usually begins during the affected persons late teens or in the twenties, and is uncommon after age 35 and unusual after age 45 years. Global studies suggest that the lifetime prevalence of PD is between 1.5% and 3.5%. In the United States approximately 3-5% of the population is affected with the disorder. In any given year approximately 1.7% of the U.S. population has PD. This represents about 2.4 million Americans. PD is twice as common in females compared to males (female:male ratio is 2:1).

How does the Linden Method for anxiety work?

The Linden Method is a solution you should consider. It was very useful in treating my father and is a non drugs based solution.

The basis of the technique is an understanding of the brain and how it works. Different parts of the brain do different things. One part in particular is responsible for anxiety, called the amygdale. It is a part of the brain which tells the rest of our brain when to be afraid and triggers the "fight or flight" response.

In a healthy brain, the amygdala heightens our senses and allows us to flee from danger, avoid an attack, or gives us the energy to fend off a predator. But in an Anxiety suffer their amygdala is always "on", leading to the brain providing fight or flight signals all the time This causes the anxiety, panic attacks and feeling of being on edge. This can cause serious long-term health problems because of the adrenaline that is constantly being pumped out of the brain.

The Linden Method re-trains your brain to behave like a normal healthy brain, stopping the problem. This is done through cognitive behavioral therapy. This actually changes your brain physically using techniques that change the way that you think. This process is called neuroplasticity.

In the Linden Method it's creator, and past suffer, Charles, guides you through the steps to change the way that you think, breaking your personal patterns of anxiety and re-set your brain to function in a controlled manner.

The course also teaches you lifestyle changes that will help ease your anxiety. This includes changes in your diet controlling blood sugar levels that affect anxiety, the use of exercise and also provides instruction on how to change your day to day habits that can lead to your own anxiety. You can read my review of the program using this link.

I feel like your head is stuffy and your top of your head have a burning problem and both feet tingel?

There may be more than one problem going on here... There are reports of some people having scalp pain with a sinus infection. That would go along with your nasal stuffiness. Perhaps you area having a reaction to hair products or coloring? Other things could be a bacterial or fungal infection of the scalp. Do you have psoriasis (you would know if your did... your doctor would have told you) ? Tingling feet could be caused by diabetes or other nerve diseases, such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS) or Renaud's Disease... Tingling feet can also be caused by spinal cord compression from arthritis of the spine. If you are a diabetic, that could explain the burning of your head and the tingling feet... Hope I haven't scared you!! If you haven't talked to a doctor yet, maybe you should talk to one so he can examine you... This would make it easier for him to answer your questions...

How did you overcome panic attacks?

One of the most effective ways to stop having panic attacks is to look at each symptom of the panic attack as it's own thing, rather than a symptom of a panic attack. For example, someone might always feel really dizzy when he is starting to have a panic attack. Then the next time he feels dizzy and can't explain why, he begins to get nervous, and the nervousness causes more symptoms, and the cycle continues until he's actually having a panic attack. A way for him to get better would be to start spinning, and replicate the dizziness, so he can realize that dizziness doesn't necessarily mean panic attack. If you sweat excessively during panic attacks, then go to a sauna. If you feel out of breath during panic attacks, hyperventilate. Isolating the symptoms can help stop them from escalating.

How does shyness different from social anxiety disorder?

Shyness is a fear of meeting new people. Social Anxiety Disorder is a fear of being around people, feeling as if everyone is looking at you, talking about you, and judging you. --I have social anxiety, and what I feel is basically the "fear of being around people". I just get anxious, and want to avoid social interation. I don't really enjoy being with people, other than my close family, and I have a social "barrier". If I have to mingle with a family at our house, after a while I feel exhausted, like I need some time by myself. NOTE; I'm a teen, and age/experience may have an effect.
