well i have just started breeding guppies and i have looked it up a hundred times. this is what I've got for you: if you want them to develop their color then it would take about two months. but it goes a lot faster if you keep their water temperature lukewarm ( aka boiling ) but if you want them to be big enough to put in with the bigger fishes then it would take a week or two. just make sure you separate the mother from the babies as soon as you see the little guys.

The commonest reason for any fish to be at the surface of a tank is the water is putrid and lacking in oxygen. I would guess that you are not keeping to the basic rules of fishkeeping which are. :- 1 inch of fish needs AT LEAST 1 gallon of water. :- Every tank must have a permanently running cycled filter. Every tank needs at least 50% of its water replaced every week. If you keep to the above rules your fish will stand a chance provided you also adhere to the fishes specific temperature and other water parameter requirements. If you fail in any of them I can guarantee that your fish will be constantly getting sick and causing you problems.

It depends on how many guppies, and how well you keep up the tank. In a ten gallon tank, I'd say no more than ten guppies, and do frequent water changes. 10-15% weekly. They need a filter and a heater, as well.

It depends on the species. There are at least three different species commonly called 'Gourami'. In the case of Colisia sp. and Helostoma sp. the male is much more colourfull than the female. In Trichogaster sp. the main difference is in the fins. The males have much longer flowing fins than the female.

You may be overfeeding it, Fish are often given too much food even if they will eat it. It is recommended you feed them however much they can eat in about 5 minutes only once or twice a day. Be sure to clear out uneaten food from the tank as it may cause the water to get cloudy. Also if you are talking about goldfish they are in general just a dirty fish that does that a lot.

The freshwater Angelfish is a typical Amazonian cichlid. It shows great intelligence. They will co-operate with other Angelfish and hunt in a pack when chasing small fish like Neon Tetras to eat.

Mosquitofish are a species of fresh water fish that are normally known by a simple generic name, "Gambusia" and in Hong Kong they are also known as live-bearing tooth-carp. Mosquitofish are native to the watershed of the Gulf of Mexico, where they readily feed on the aquatic larval and pupal stages of the mosquito, hence the name. They are very hardy fish that can survive in water with very low oxygen content and even live for short periods of time in water of up to 42 degrees. It is mainly for this reason that this species is thought to be the most widespread freshwater fish in the world, as it has now been introduced as a bio-control measure to many tropical and temperate areas in both hemispheres. Their appearance is similar to that of tropical guppies. Female Mosquitofish can measure up to 2.5 inches (7 cm) when fully matured, whereas male tend to be smaller, measuring just 1.5 inches (4 cm). Under the right conditions the Mosquitofish can live about two to three years. Females reach sexual maturity at about six to eight weeks of age and may bear three to four broods in a single season. The first tends to number only a dozen, but as the fish matures, broods increase in size and can typically reach 60 to 100 young. Females are able to store sperm in their reproductive tract for up to two months and give birth to live young, as opposed to laying eggs. This gives the young a much higher rate of survival over other egg laying species, who often suffer from predators feeding on the eggs.

You did not mention if you were referring to fresh or salt water angels. Yes both can eat shrimp with no ill effects. The freshwater angel prefers the small grass (also called ghost) shrimp, and live brine shrimp when trying to get into breeding condition.

No, unless the barbs are really execptionally peaceful. If not, they would bully the guppies and the guppies would be dead due to nips and injuries.

I have to disagree with the answer as I have a community tank which has Guppy and Barb (Tiger & Ruby) and my guppy bullies the barbs! All are living together and I have had only one injury which was actually to my Silver Dollar and was caused by him getting wedged in between heater and glass. It depends on the kind of gourami you have. In some it's the male is more colourful (Colisa species) In others its the male has longer, flowing fins (Trichogaster species). If you have Kissing Gouramies there is no sexual dimorphism.

They are considered fin nippers. However, they are compatible fish for bettas. They are schooling fish so I would at least get 4 or more. When purchasing the fish ask the seller/retailer about their return policy; you may be able to return them without penalty if they pester your betta, or the possibility your betta ends up being to aggressive for tank mates. Let it settle down. They are very touchy when they are in strange surroundings. Basic rules for Oscars. 1 Oscar needs at least a 20 gallon tank. temperature about 80F pH around 6.8 a good cycled filter running permanently and at least 50% of its water changed every week.

My personal opinion is that breeding nets and traps are unsuitable for livebearers other than guppies. Confining a fully grown fish to a space this small for any extended period (ie several days) is extremely stressful. It can cause an abortion of the fry or even the death of the mother. I would not recommend these devices except for raising fry in. I have used breeding traps but only if all of my brood tanks are in use and I see the first few fry come out of the mother. This way I know she will only be in one for a few hours.

The use of a separate breeding tank is very effective. I use a four gallon (16 litre) tank for this purpose. I use fake ambulia or cabomba, which can be packed away when not in use. These plants (and therefore their plastic copies) have fine fronds for the fry to hide from the mother who may eat them. For a period of only a few days I don't bother with filtration, I just use an airstone, but any longer will require a filter. An air driven box filter will suffice. As soon as the mother has finished giving birth I remove her. The fry can be reared in this setup or removed to another setup (or placed in a breeding box in the main tank.)

I am a serious breeder with a network of people who take fry I do not want or cannot look after - I keep only the best fry for my breeding program. A lot of serious breeders cull the fry but I prefer to give them away than kill them because they aren't pretty enough. If you consistently isolate your females to give birth you will find that you become overrun with fry. Having fry is fun. Having a large number of half-grown platies, too small to give away but large enough to need several tanks, is not. Do not save more fry than you can look after. Most pet shops will take fry that are pretty enough to sell, and many have customers who keep large predatory fish. These shops will also take ugly or deformed fry to use as feeders.

Yes! GSPs can be kept with African Cichlids but only can they be introduced together when both are young and in a big enough aquarium with lots of plants and decor. Both will learn to co exist together but keep them well fed. Be careful when choosing your Cichlids as some are not peaceful for example TEXAS CICHLIDS but fire mouths, jewels and malawis should be fine. GSPs are aggressive fish when mature so be aware and prepared that some tank mates could become dinner at any time. R.Martin Marine biologist.

Yes, they can, but they usually are with a mate or are alone. If you do have more than a pair in a tank, then make sure they can each have their own territory. Angelfish can be very territorial.
