Why is your aquarium water cloudy?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

This problem along with smelly or foamy water is caused by a high concentration of bacteria in the water. Uneaten fish food or fish waste in the water provides nourishment for bacteria, that are floating in the water, and feeding on the waste in the water. These bacteria often cause Signs of Stress and Disease in the fish. 1. Start by thoroughly cleaning your tank. 2. Change Some Water Every Day. Change some water every day. I recommend that you change 20% of the water. Changing more than 20% of the water in one day is risky to your fish. By changing some of the water, you'll remove some of the dissolved waste and begin to starve the bacteria. But don't get impatient and change too much water, because that can harm the fish. 3. Reduce the Amount of Food. Too much food often causes Cloudy Water, so reduce the amount of food and be sure your fish eat all the food that you feed them. Remove uneaten food after 10 minutes. 4. Add the Following Chemicals to Your Water. Aquarium Salt. The dose is on the box. Water Conditioner. The correct dose is on the bottle. Quick Cure. Add a half-dose as a preventative. Do not add any other chemicals or medications to the water. Add the Aquarium Salt just once, but repeat the AquaSafe and Quick Cure every day until the water clears. Be careful to use the correct doses of each chemical because more will not be better. All three of these items are available in most stores that sell pet fish. 5. If your Fish's Home has Gravel, get a handful of gravel from an established aquarium with healthy fish and sprinkle that gravel on top of the gravel that you already have. The beneficial bacteria that are living on the handful of gravel will quickly multiply to cover the surfaces of the rest of the gravel in your cloudy aquarium. The beneficial bacterial will digest the waste in your water, and the water will quickly clear. Where can you get a handful of gravel from an established aquarium with healthy fish? Often you can just go to a local fish store and ask for a handful of gravel, and they will give it to you. You might offer to pay. Ask them to get the gravel from an aquarium that has been trouble free. For example, you certainly wouldn't want to get gravel from an aquarium that recently had a case of the disease called ich. The fish store may also offer to sell you several different products that will solve your Cloudy Water problem. Just tell them that you'd like to try the handful of gravel first. 6. How to Avoid Cloudy, Foamy, or Smelly Water. Don't feed your fish more than they can eat. Learn to feed your fish so there isn't any uneaten food left over. Carefully watch your fish eat and then remove any uneaten food after 10 minutes. Be sure to clean your tank once a month and change 20% of the water twice a week. If you have an aquarium, it should have the correct type of filter that's clean and working properly. I recommend a power filter with a BIO-Wheel. The BIO-Wheel is very important. A layer of gravel 1/4-inch thick will help keep the water in a fish bowl clear. But aquariums with a bio-wheel filter don't need gravel. If you like the appearance of gravel, make sure it's only 1/4-inch thick. Always stir the gravel gently just before you change water.

How long can a mosquito fish be pregnant?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Mosquito fish are live-bearers; meaning they will have live free swimming fry. The mother will have a black spot on her belly near her vent, called the gravid spot, which will get larger as the fry are developing inside her. The vent itself will be a little open as she is about to birth.

To maximize the amount of surviving fry, make sure to separate the mother into a specialized area where she cannot access the fry, nor the other fish as they will be eaten. Or have plenty of plants and other hiding places for the fry to hide in.

Do tetras need the light on at night?

User Avatar

Asked by Cutefishy345

Fish don't really sleep in the same manner as most animals. They move into more of a decreased activity state in which that make minimal fin movements only to stay upright.

Do they need dark to sleep? Well that depends on the fish really. Some fish are nocturnal and come out during the dark. But the general answer is no, they don't need it to sleep, but it helps let them know that it is time to start sleeping.

How soon will a ten gallon tank be ready to have fish in it?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Your best option would be to set up a freshwater tank because most saltwater fish require larger tanks than ten gallons.

First, you would need a power filter to filter your tank.

Second, you would need an air pump and a bubble wall to oxygenate your water.

Third, you would have to cycle your tank. This means growing bacteria that eliminate ammonia in your aquarium. To do this, add 1 hardy fish for every seven gallons of water in your tank. Danios work well for this. After 6-8 weeks, you can add more fish. Be sure not to add too many fish at a time.

Depending on the fish you are planning to get, you may need an aquarium heater. If you want tropical fish, you will need a heater. If you are planning to raise coldwater fish such as goldfish, you will not need a heater. Most freshwater fish are tropical, so you will probably need a heater.

You will also need to research what the fish you want eat and buy the food.

For fish options, Tetras, Guppies, Anabantids (Bettas and Gouramis), Loaches, Cyprinids, and Cichlids work well for beginners. PetSmart has a wide variety of fish. You could also try a local pet shop near you, but they probably won't have as many options.

I hope this helps you...

What does an aquarium pump do?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Most of them pump air into the tank so that the fish can breathe better. You should get one if you have a bamboo shrimp, I know from expirience.

The usefull thing an air pump can do is to drive a filter which is designed to remove the poisons that occur in every fish tank. Simply using it to blow bubbles is a waste.

How does a vacuum tube work?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

contains only a heated electron-emitting cathode and an anode. Electrons can only flow in one direction through the device—from the cathode to the anode. Adding one or more control grids within the tube allows the current between the cathode and anode to be controlled by the voltage on the grids.[5]

Will it hurt your mosquito fish or pond snails if you clean out your old dusty aquarium with dish soap while they are not in it?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It is OK to use a detergent when cleaning (scrubbing) out a dirty fish tank. The important thing is to make very sure the tank is scrubbed with clean water a couple of times after the detergent has been rinsed out. Any detergent left in the tank could easily kill your fish.

How do you apply aquarium background to outside of fish tank?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A very useful trick I learned to apply a background onto a fish tank is to first smear vasoline evenly across the side of back ground you want viewed though the tank. Next, place the graphic against the back of the tank and pressing gently. The vasoline will act as a glue like substance preventing the backing from falling. Take a credit card or photo ID and starting from the center, press hard onto the backing with the edge of the card and pull toward the edge in even, long pulls. Excess vasoline will be excreting from the edge and simply wipe up as expelled. This will help remove any and all air pockets from between the glass and the backing causing a even full contact and increasing visibility and vibrancy.
