What is a crossbow arrow called other than a bolt?

A quarrel or bolt is the term for the ammunition used in a crossbow. The name "quarrel" is derived from the French carré, "square", referring to the fact that they typically have square heads. They are typically shorter than traditional arrows, though some may be longer, and can be fired repetitively in some cases. Bolts and arrows have different flight characteristics. Bolts fall at the same rate, independent of the speed of flight. Arrows, in contrast, depend on gaining lift in flight, and hence have their centre of balance at a point about 9% of their length forward of their center. This is called "point planing".

What does 'string follow' mean in archery?

String follow, also known as 'set' is a term used by bowyers to describe the amount a bow stays curved after it's unbraced (unstrung). For example you have a straight limbed bow. You brace (string) the bow with a brace height (distance between the arrow rest and where you nock the arrow) of 7". When you unbrace the bow, it maintains some of the curve that it had while braced. The amount it stays curved is the amount of string follow. The term is used for wood or backed self bows. Some string follow is not bad when creating a bow as it dampens hand shock and quiets a bow, but excessive string follow will rob a bow of cast.

How do fire arrows work?

Fire arrows are used to quickly burn up enemies, but are also important towards the end of the game. You mainly use them to light unlit torches in the Fire Temple, and during the "trials" in the castle during the last couple hours of the game.

On the Nintendo 3DS, the controls are: Go to "Items". Tap your bow, then assign it to a button, I, X,Y, or II, then double tap it to select "fire arrows." Press the assigned button, then aim and shoot at something flammable by pressing the button again.

Controls for the original game: Press START, go to ITEMS, select your bow and arrow, assign it to DOWN, LEFT, or RIGHT, then select FIRE ARROWS. Hit START, to return to the game, and then tap the assigned button, then aim with the middle joystick and hit the assigned button to fire.

If you are using another version of the game, such as the Wii Virtual Console edition, or an emulation, please consult the manual.

To open the manual for the Wii edition, press the HOME button while your game is running and hit "Manual."

Is it true that In Britain it is the law that every male between the ages of ten and eighteen years old must meet on a Sunday morning at the village?

There used to be a law similar to those words - that required men between those ages to practice archery - it was repealed in 1960 when the government of the time decided to 'clean up' some of the archaic laws still on the statute books.

How long does it take to make a longbow from start and how much time does just preparing the string take?

There are two answers to this question; one if the wood is already seasoned and ready to shape, the other if you are starting with fresh wood straight from a tree. There are other complications to be noted.

If you are using seasoned ash wood, where the grain is very straight, rough shaping can be done in a day, then "tillering" the bow carefully by scraping to its optimum draw weight can take another day. Seasoned yew, if it is full of knots and twisted grain, can be extremely difficult since it is important to find a layer of the grain and follow it very carefully, without cutting through it - a bow can take many days to complete.

If you start with fresh timber you need to wait around two years for it to dry out naturally in a shaded, cool, dry place outdoors before you can start to produce a bow.

Strings, if you have the linen or other thread ready to use, can be made in an hour or two, including the laid-in loops and the serving to prevent arrows from wearing the string away. Linen strings must also be rubbed with beeswax to prevent rotting.

Complications include:

  • modern laminate longbows made from two or more layers of different timbers glued together. A complex and potentially frustrating process that can take a very long time, but which can produce a very strong bow.
  • Any piece of wood, although apparently flawless, can contain weak spots which can mean the bow will break at any moment; a shattering longbow under tension from the string sounds just like a gunshot and can be a terrifying experience.

How many strings does a compound bow have?

one and then they have a cord but techinally three

What bow if i want the shelf on the left side but pull the string with left hand?

The answer would have to be "the wrong kind", a right handed user pulls the string with his/her right hand and has the shelf on the LEFT, whereas a left handed user (such as yourself) pulls the string with his/her left hand and needs the arrow shelf on the RIGHT.

As a real archer with three years of experience with various bows (st the time of writing), I know for certain that bows should never have the shelf on the wrong side.

How do I change the draw length on a youth compound bow?

Draw the bow to full draw and hold it. Have your assistant place a nail in the small round hole in the bottom of each pulley wheel and then slowly let the pressure off of the bow string.

Unhook the looped bowstring from the metal string connectors and set aside. Slide the connectors up and away from the bow limbs and pull them out of the pulley wheels. Move the connectors to a new hole or position on the wheels (a higher hole if you want the draw length shorter or a lower hole if you want the draw length longer).

Reconnect the string to the metal string connectors and draw the bow to full draw again. Have your assistant pull the nails out of the pulley wheels and then let the bow down slowly.

This process can also be performed by using a bow press to depress the bow's limbs and then changing the draw length in the same manner.
