Can CPR help a asthma victim?

If the asthma victim's heart has stopped beating, then yes, CPR can help restart the heart.

However, CPR can't cure what caused the heart to stop, which in an asthma victim, is most likely a lack of oxygen. If the underlying asthma attack is not treated so that the person can get enough oxygen, their heart will likely stop again soon after it is restarted.

Asthma causes the airways to swell shut. The airways must be opened up by medications and/ or a breathing tube down the throat inserted by a doctor. Otherwise, the rescue breathing that is done during CPR will not be as effective in giving the person oxygen, because the air cannot get past the closed-up airways.

In short, yes, CPR helps an asthma victim, and should be done immediately for anyone whose heart has stopped beating. However, in order to survive long term, the victim should be taken to a hospital by ambulance right away so that the cause of the problem can be treated.

Why is asthma worse at night?

Nocturnal asthma is a term used to describe the asthma of patients whose symptoms strike mostly at night - often while the patient is sleeping. The majority of these attacks occur between midnight and 8 a.m., peaking on average around 4 a.m. This is when pulmonary (lung) functions are at their lowest level, because circulating blood levels of epinephrine and cortisol - which protect the body against asthma - are at their lowest levels. Nearly 75 percent of asthma patients experience increased symptoms at night, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Frequent bouts of nocturnal asthma may indicate that a patient's asthma is not being properly controlled. Experts believe several factors may be responsible for the increased incidence of asthma symptoms at night. These include the body's circadian rhythms, the internal clock that regulates the ebb and flow of various chemicals and body functions. Patients with nocturnal asthma should consult a physician. This condition is often an indicator of severe asthma or asthma that requires further treatment. Certain behavioral modifications can reduce the likelihood of night-time symptoms. Medications also are available in time-release or long-lasting formulations to ensure that a patient with nocturnal asthma gets the medicine they need when they need it most.

Why does an asthma attack increase heart rate Can it cause heart failure if heart beats too fast?

During an asthma attack there is no sufficient air entering the lungs, which can affect the heart in many ways.

Firstly, it creates stress and releases adrenaline, which speeds up the heart beat.

Secondly, the pressure in the lungs makes it difficult for blood to pass by the capillaries, and to be oxygenated, which blocks the right ventricle, and as a consequence, also the left atrium.

If the asthma attack is not dealt with fast, then the rise in pulse and the decrease in blood pressure (not enough blood reaching left side of heart, hence not pumping enough to rest of body), then you could have a cardiac arrhythmia (eg. atrial fibrillation), or in sever cases an heart attack.

However, this occurs only in extreme cases, and mainly in people with existing heart problems. _____________________________________________________________________ Your heart will beat faster when your having a hard time to breathe. You cannot get heart failure if it beats to fast as your heart is made of myocardium Muscle which never get tired. For more information contact meHow_heart_works heart is beating to fast this is often referred to as Sinus Tachycardia. Sinus Tachycardia is a medical emergency!! It is likely that the subject will seize before this happens. An irregular heat beat is called Sinus arrthymia. This is increasly common and many people are unaware they have it. By the use of local anaesthetic the patient is shocked and the heart 'reset'.

if you have a record of asma past the age of 13 you cannot become a fighter pilot!

I was told by the RAF i couldn't join because i had asthma past the age of 4.

2nd Answer

The DOD medical regulation for the most part mirror the FAA's FARs, under the FAA you can have asthma (as long as it is controlled) and be authorized to fly. I do know some Army pilots that have been approved to fly even with Asthma; the navy shouldn't be any different. Ask the flight surgeon to submit for a waiver for this condition.
