Astronauts

This category is for questions related to the personal requirements of Astronautical missions. The training, living accommodations, and working conditions both on the Earth and in space are discussed here. For further information on a particular astronaut, please see the name in question.

Who inspired neil Armstrong?

Neil Armstrong was inspired by pioneers of aviation and space exploration such as Charles Lindbergh, Chuck Yeager, and test pilots at NASA. He was also motivated by his fascination with airplanes and flying since childhood.

What type of transport do astronauts use?

According to all my research for a school project, astronauts use rockets, space shuttles and spaceships. I'll give a few examples of them: The Challenger, (which busted 7 seconds after take off), Apollo13, and Endeavour.

Now, for some extra info. Unlike early explorers, astronauts used more sophisticated tools of navigation. Explorers used hour glasses and astrolabes (measures latitude, while we lucky people get to use computers, computers, and even more computers! Astronauts also used stars as navigational tools. For example, if astronauts saw the North Star, they would know they're going north, and hopefully, in the correct direction.

Well, I hope you learnt a lot from my small lecture. Remember, I'm only in grade 6!

How long could an astronaut live in space without a space suit?

You wouldn't explode and you wouldn't freeze to death. You would die of asphyxiation. The extreme pressure difference would pull all of the air from your lungs; several other effects would reduce the amount of oxygen in your body until you died. See the related links for more information.

Describe the conditions under which astronauts train weightness in space?

I'm uncertain what the question means. Astronauts do not normally 'train' while in space. They train in preparation for space. Assuming that is what the question means:

There are two ways astronauts train for weightlessness. Neither is satisfactory.

* They train it a place called the WIF or Water Immersion Facility. You can think of this as a swimming pool where the astronauts and the equipment they handle are made neutrally buoyant. That is, heavy or light material is attached so they neither float nor sink in water, but remain suspended in the water. The resistance of the water on movement and the fact that your internal organs still feel the pull of gravity limit it's value for simulating weightlessness in space. * They ride on an airplane that makes zero-g parabolic flights (visit link below). The airplane (called variously, the Vomit Comet, the Weightless Wonder, etc.) climes to a peak then allows itself to fall for about 30 seconds. When you are falling you are weightless, so this accurately simulates the weightlessness of space. But, but the short periods and the high forces when the plane pulls out of the fall make it of limited value for training.

What was the second Americans name that orbited earth?

The second American to orbit Earth was John Glenn, on February 20, 1962 aboard the Friendship 7 spacecraft.

What does the word astronaut mean?

An astronaut is a person who travels in space and explores the universe, often as part of a space mission or program. They are highly trained professionals who undergo rigorous physical and mental preparation for space travel.

How does NASA choose which US astronauts will go into space?

NASA selects astronauts based on their qualifications, experience, and performance. Selection criteria include education, specialized training, flight experience, and physical fitness. Astronaut candidates undergo a rigorous selection process that includes interviews, medical evaluations, and training evaluations before being chosen for specific missions.

How do astronauts go to the bathroom in space?

Astronauts use a specially designed toilet that suctions waste away to avoid floating around. They also have a funnel system for urination, which is vacuumed away. Solid waste is collected and stored for disposal when they return to Earth.

Who is the first filipino astronaut?

The first Filipino astronaut is Chino Roque. He is a member of the Axe Apollo Space Academy and is training to potentially become the first Filipino in space.

Who was the second American in space and one of the three astronauts killed in the first fatal US space program accident?

Virgil "Gus" Grissom was the second American in space. He tragically lost his life in the Apollo 1 spacecraft fire along with astronauts Ed White and Roger B. Chaffee during a pre-launch test for the Apollo program.

How do astronauts communicate in space?

Astronauts mainly communicate in space using radio waves. They use radios to talk to mission control on Earth and to communicate with each other inside the spacecraft. They can also use video conferencing and email for communication purposes.

What is Edwin Aldrin's nickname?

Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin is an American astronaut and the second person to walk on the Moon during NASA's Apollo 11 mission in 1969.

What was Edwin Aldrins nickname?

Buzz Aldrin. His baby sister couldn't pronounce "brother" and called him "Buzzer", and it stuck.

Why should astronauts train in the vomit comet?

The Modified B-707 (or K/C-135) used for low gravity training, (astronauts, etc.). It flew a paraboloic curve that simulated weightlessness.

What happens to Blood pressure of astronaut in space?

Because blood is liquid, its boiling point is affected by pressure changes. Extremely low pressure would lower the boiling point enough that the blood would boil at a temperature less than body temperature.

First Australian astronaut in space?

Astronaut Andy Thomas became the first Australian citizen in space, while Paul Scully-Powers was the first Australian-born astronaut to enter space.

What are Russia's astronauts called?

Russia calls its astronauts, cosmonauts. Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin was the first cosmonaut in space on April 12, 1961. Gagarin was able to do a full Earth orbit.

This was before America's first astronaut in space, Alan Shepard on May 5, 1961 which was only a suborbital flight.

Who invented or made the space suit?

The inventor of the space suit was Zachery Hansen.

What were the names of the first astronauts to go outer space?

The original astronauts on the first mission using space shuttle Discovery were.

PositionAstronaut

Do you have to be in the military in order to be an astronaut?

No. The reason that many astronauts are active duty, reserve, or veterans of the military is that the armed forces are the major training venue for pilots. Astronauts who are not pilots (mission specialists) come from many scientific fields.
