At the present moment, there is a lack of substantial evidence to prove that atheists or agnostics are more successful than the theistic population, but because atheists reject the notion of an afterlife and acknowledge that they only have one life before death, this MAY lead them to realistically think in goal oriented ways which would eventually motivate them to accomplish as much as they can in order to succeed and enjoy life to its fullest level before they die.

However there is a correlation that demonstrates that nations that are mostly atheistic or secular (such as Sweden, France, the Netherlands, and Japan) all have some of the highest standard of living ratings in the world. So it seems that more irreligious countries (or secular countries) all have increased wealth (higher GDP rates) and better qualities of life. It has also been empirically proven that atheists tend to be more educated and have higher IQs.

Also, more irreligious (secular) nations have lower prison populations, higher rates of education and lower crime rates on average compared to more religious nations-in which, antithetically, more pious nations are characterized by a profusion of cultural and scientific deterioration, retrogression and subordination of women.

There is no atheist view except that there is no god. Atheists think whatever they want. However when you take "god" out of the picture you have a Universe (and reality) that runs on understandable physical relationships (rainbows are caused by diffraction, not heavenly benevolence, good or bad luck comes as the result of probability and statistics (not divine intervention or satanic interference), beauty is a cultural artifact, and goodness, mercy and a lot of other social interactions become the obvious result of beneficial altruism. The rules always work - the sun doesn't move back in the sky, iron doesn't float, and genetics are not changed by striped sticks - there are no miracles.

Hopefully to help people question things that don't make sense. It's when we do then positive progress takes place. People don't understand the scientific method and how valuable it is. By questioning, observing, researching, testing, discussing, people are healed through medicine (and not left for dead because God is mad at them for something.) Hopefully to replace fear with understanding.

People fear change. For 2000 years we have been taught and even forced to believe a certain way. When Galileo in the 1600's showed the Church that the earth was not the center of the universe, they banished him for such heresey. Copernicus put the sun as the center of the universe almost a century earlier. If he had not died the day his book was published he may very well have been burned at the stake. 400 plus years later we now know the sun is at center, and faith was not lost. The Vatican in recent years has agreed that evolution is correct, but fundamentalist churches are gnashing their teeth over evolution. Faith is faith; science is not, it is fact. My hope is that the two can reconcile. Science does not want to undermine people's faith. That was my own last obstacle to overcome as I let go of faith to be an atheist.

Almost certainly there are atheist priests who keep quiet about their true beliefs who might be described as Christian atheists.

It is certainly a delusion; but the propensity of some religious followers to try and extend that delusion shows that it applies to more than just the self. Also MASS delusion.

Like most people they hang out with people they feel comfortable with. This may include other atheists, interesting people of all stripes, musicians, welders, sky divers, chess players - whatever. Of course. In business and contract usage an 'act of god' is not a religious term. It refers to an unreasonably severe, unpredictible event caused by natural forces without any human interference. It is an event over which the insured party, or party to a contract, has absolutely no control. Examples are: snowstorm, hurricane, tornado, earthquake, etc. Also called 'acts of nature' they are insurable and provide a valid reason for non-performance of a contract.

As nice as it is to believe that belief is a choice, many factors come into play. Parents who would disown you, clients who would not support your business, citizens who would not vote for you and schools that would torment your children are all possible outcomes of being an open atheist. As a consequence many atheists are still "in the closet" so that they can avoid this persecution. As a consequence bing a non-believer is your choice but you can never avoid going to church and praying at public functions and so on.

From the Enlightenment period (1700s) in Europe atheism took on the concept of rejecting all gods. Thinkers, like Baron d'Holbach and Jean Meslier, denied in writing the existence of all gods, particularly the Christian god.

Today atheism includes two different but related beliefs - (1)the denial in the belief in god and (2) the rejection of the existence of god.

Since the advent of Darwinian evolution and the massive changes it brought to the scientific community, atheists have found more mainstream acceptance of their beliefs. As Richard Dawkins puts it, this has made it possible to be an 'intellectually fulfilled atheist.' This does not change atheists premises or their beliefs, but has simply been used as a pillar supporting them. They would thus claim, and frequently do, to have a massive amount of scientific data which supports their system of belief.

Atheists also point out the massive scientific consensus surrounding evolution, as if numbers somehow make their data correct. While the numbers are most certainly on their side, and the consensus, and the media generally, and the public school system as well, many people still do not share their beliefs. Others, some of whom are themselves atheists, question the scientific merit of a number of key evolutionary pillars. Nevertheless, they continue to remain committed to both, indicating the link between them and the importance which belief in evolution has come to play in modern day atheism. The two have thus become inextricably linked.

In line with this belief system is the apparent necessity to suppress and deny, rather than scientifically investigate any alternative views or contradictory data. This is even so within 'scientific atheism' itself where critics of the Big Bang, although growing in number due to increased data against it, have in the past remained silent lest they suffer discrimination. Even the late Stephen J. Gould raised his eyebrows at the denial of the Nobel Prize for Medicine to Dr. Damadian, its undoubted inventor and patent holder. This, as Gould himself no doubt perceived because of Damadian's open creationist views. Apart from the Big Bang dissenters, much contradictory data, and many serious unsolved problems remain, atheism continues to enjoy the support it finds in the modern scientific consensus.

The word "Ethism" does not exist in English as far as I know. The closest word to it is the greek word "Ethismos" which means addiction. Do not confuse it with "Atheism" which is used for describing the act of not believing in any God or belong some kind of religion.

Things simply are, they don't need a "purpose" which responds to the question of why.

Assume that things were different and you were a creature from some science fiction story - even though you swam in molten sulfur, were scaly and 4 meters tall you would still ask the same questions.

Scientists can't even prove that ghosts are real and if they were (which I don't believe), it probably wouldn't be any more toxic than that from a human.
