Ballet is a formalized form of dance with its origins in the Italian Renaissance courts of the 15th and 16th centuries. It quickly spread to the French court of Catherine de' Medici where it was developed even further. In the 17th century at the time of Louis XIV, ballet was codified. The predominance of French in the vocabulary of ballet reflects this history. It also became a form closely associated with the opera. Ballet then spread from the heart of Europe to other nations. The Royal Danish Ballet and the Imperial Ballet of the Russian Empire were founded in the 1740s and began to flourish, especially after about 1850. In 1907 the Russian ballet in turn moved back to France, where the Ballets Russes of Sergei Diaghilev and its successors were particularly influential. Soon ballet spread around the world with the formation of new companies, including London's The Royal Ballet (1931), the San Francisco Ballet (1933), American Ballet Theatre (1937), The Australian Ballet (1940), the New York City Ballet (1948), the National Ballet of Canada (1951), and the Delhi Ballet (2002). In the 20th century styles of ballet continued to develop and strongly influence broader concert dance, for example, in the United States choreographer George Balanchine developed what is now known as neoclassical ballet, subsequent developments have included contemporary ballet and post-structural ballet, for example seen in the work of William Forsythe in Germany.
The etymology of the word "ballet" reflects its history. The word ballet comes from French and was borrowed into English around the 17th century. The French word in turn has its origins in Italian balletto, a diminutive of ballo (dance). Ballet ultimately traces back to Latin ballare, meaning "to dance".
Ballet is only painful when you turn your feet out to much, or are trying to lift your leg higher. Sometimes it can hurt if one knee or ankle is growing faster than the other. That tends to happen a lot to dancers, at least in my class.

When were ballet pointe shoes invented?
Pointe shoes were invented when Marie Taglioni in about 1824. she was the first person to attempt pointework gracefully instead of an acrobatic stunt, along with ungraceful arm movements. She darned her soft slippers to make a little bit of support for her feet, but it provided not even a fraction of support that modern pointe shoes do. She didn't use wires like other "pointe" dancers, and her feet were extremely strong. The pointe shoe later evolved to use hardened paste and a box instead of darned soft slippers.

The National Ballet School of Canada is a great ballet academy that is by audition only. Itis very prestigious and government-sponsered, I believe. It is harder to get in when you are older, like most ballet academies. You need to have significantly good range turnout form the hip, arched feet, musicality, and flexibility and extension.
What are some cheerleading stretches?
I do cheerleading and every time we have practice we do these stretches -- try holding them each for 10 seconds and the split and the strattle for 25.
-do 25 jumping jacks
-sit in a strattle position and touch your toes on the right, left, and then the middle
-put your feet straight out in front of you and spread them about 6" apart; now touch your toes
-put your feet out straight in front of you and touch your toes
-ut one foot out in front of you and the other one bent so that your foot is on your knee; not reach for your toes and switch legs
-get in a lunge position with your knees on the ground and lean forward while your hips are straight; now do the other leg
-lean back on one knee and stretch out the other leg and point your toe; reach for your toe and switch legs
-do a split with both legs; try adding time onto 25 seconds and your split will get even better!!
-rotate your arms backwards and forwards in medium, big, and small circles
-lift one leg up in the air so that it is straight while you are sitting down; have the other leg bent towards the leg you are stretching; make sure that your leg is straight and put your hand on the heel of your foot; now switch legs
I hope these work for you and make you become a better cheerleader =]

Do overworked ballet dancers get injured more than other dancers?
I would say yes, but I don't know of any statistics or anything. But dancers who are overworked are more prone to injuries, so for a dancer who is overworked it is good to have great technique to help reduce the chance of getting an injury. But for a person who dances for maybe half the time of an overworked dancer isn't as likely to be injured because he/she wont be so physically exhausted when he/she dances and will be able to keep up with technique and stay careful.

How long does it take to be able to do a split?
if your not flexible about 3 months
Some people may take 1 month and others may take 6 months, but if you regularly do certain exercises that help stretch your muscles, then you can do it! You will feel better even as you are making progress, so even if you don't completely get them, you will still be more limber and better off for having done the regular stretching exercises- Good luck with your splits.
