Smallmouth spawn in spring. The males construct the nests, and the females come in, spawn, then leave to recover from spawning. The eggs hatch in a few days, and the male guards the newly hatched young, called fry at this stage. They do not eat, rather they rely on an egg sack for nutrition. As the sack is consumed, the tiny fish grow rapidly, and begin to feed on zoo plankton. The male parent leaves them, they grow to two inches and begin to feed on insects and tiny minnows. At this stage, they are called fingerlings. They grow five to six inches their first year, and feed now mainly on small fish, crayfish, and frogs. They can live to 16 years, and grow throughout their lives.

If the water is super clear, or you can see stumps and logs on the bottom, then you need to use a natural color. For these, I prefer Green Pumpkin, and Tequila Sunrise. Use Green Pumpkin if it is a cloudy day, and Tequila Sunrise if the sun is high.

If the water has a color to it, or stained at all, use a Watermelon Seed, or Green Pumpkin Pepper (black flakes in it).

If the water is muddy, you may want to go to a bigger bait, and consider adding rattles to your bait if you aren't getting bit. Remember to slow down a lot in muddy water. The best colors that work for me are Junebug (Black w/ Blue Fleck), and Red Shad (Black w/ Red Fleck).
