I live in massachuesetts but I think the beetle you are referring to is a stink bug. I can see the resemblance to a prehistoric animal because of its antenas and shape of its body. Its called a stink bug because if you squish it, the whole room will smell really bad so try not to kill it!

Mexican bean beetles are not known for stinging and biting. They are voracious eaters and are able to destroy large swaths of field crops.

Yes, we saw one tonight in Saratoga County, NY during a fireworks show. This one was a 2.5in female, biggest beetle you'll see in New York in the wild.
