Are lilly pilly berries poisonous to dogs?

No, the lilli pilli berry is not poisonous. I have been eating them for years and enjoy the slightly tart but very refreshing taste. We have two varieties in our yard - one is pear-shaped and pink to red

  • the other is larger and round (about the size of a largish marble). The larger one tends to be purplish rather than just red but is consistently sweeter and juicier than the pear shaped ones.Don't eat the seed in the berry. I don't believe it is harmful but it does not taste good. Check the berry for insects before eating as they can attract small ants.

How do you tell the difference between poisonous berries and good to eat berries in the woods?

Poisonous poke berries grow in water and elderberries grow on land. Both of them are not really safe to eat.

Comment from Asker: Poke Berries grow on land from what I have seen in Dallas, Texas. I found a plant growing behind an unattached garage. It had ripe purple berries on it. I almost ate them, but tried them out on a squirrel first, who sniffed and then walked away. I saw a picture on the internet of a pokeberry and it appears that the berries grow more in rows than clusters as is seen in elderberries.

Is a strawberry a tropical fruit?

Howdy,

Coach Dave here and I work for The Home Depot.

With over 7500 different types of apples you would think there would be at least one. Unfortunately in true tropical areas this is very unlikely to happen.

However, there is subtropical types that are mainly for baking. These are not sweet but they are apples. If you have a a nursery in the area let them know your looking for subtropical apple trees like "Williams' Pride" or "Tropical Beauty" however these are very prone to disease and pest's.

There is a tropical fruit called Custard Apple tree. This is not really an apple at all but I heard it taste's great.

Most apples tree require 600 to 1000 hours(25-40 days) of chill time (winter weather) for the tree to properly make apples of any type of edible fruit.

In conclusion I would recommend trying other fruit like: kiwi, passion fruit, cherimoya, guava, star fruit, or papaya instead.

I wish you all the best,

Coach Dave

Are sassafras berries edible?

Nightshade is a family of plants, not an individual plant.

Examples of edible berries in the Nightshade family:

  • Tomatoes
  • Chillies
  • Black Nightshade
  • Tomatillos
  • Wonderberries
  • Ground Cherries
  • Eggplants
  • Wolfberry/Goji
  • Garden Huckleberry

Examples of non-edible berries in the Nightshade family:

  • Belladonna/Deadly Nightshade
  • Mandrake berries
  • Henbane/Stinking Nightshade

A lot of plants in the Nightshade family get erroneously labeled as poisonous due to the fact that many of them contain varying amounts of a toxin called solanine, but there is no real evidence that unconcentrated solanine can poison humans.

For example, all of the poisonous berries I had listed were poisonous not due to solanine; but by other toxins.
