Because people don't know their real name. They possibly also have got mixed up between Siamese, Chinese, and Japanese. It seems that in the US of A any of those countries are used in conjunction with 'Fighting fish' Its real name is 'Betta splendens' commonly shortened to 'Betta"

Yes, she can. A tank that size could even accomidate her and an otocinclus (i'm not sure of the spelling) which is a type of algae eater. As long as the water is conditioned, water changes are done on schedule and there is adequate lighting, and there is air going into the water with or without the filtration things should be fine. You will find the algae eater a small, friendly and welcome addition. A tank this size with lighting a good part of the day will quickly grow algae. Its healthier to control it naturally than to try to control it with chemicals. Best of luck!

It could be because he/she has over-eaten or because he/she has dropsy. If only the "chest" is swollen, he/she has probably eaten too much. Don't feed him/her for a day or two, or give him/her a small piece of a pea (put a frozen pea in a little water and microwave for 10-15 seconds, then cool it down and cut it up, no skin). Start feeding him/her a little less at meal times.

If the whole fish is swollen, and the scales are sticking out (a little like a pinecone), it is dropsy. Dropsy can be caused by many things, including bacteria. If it is bacterial, it can be treated. Go to the pet store and look for fish medication. Good ones to look for are Maracyn or Maracyn-Two, but they are not the only medicines out there. Read the label of each brand carefully to see what will treat dropsy the best.

A male won't build a bubble nest until: The female is introduced into the tank by a glass chimney and the male is released inside the tank. Seeing the female, the male will swim towards her, flaring. He will try to break into the chimney, though he is unable to reach the grand prize (yet!). It is normal for the female to be frightened at first, but once your female has vertical lines appearing on her body, then you are in good shape, if she doesn't, she might change her mind later! LOL! The male will then look possessed, as if in a trance. He will then begin building the bubble nest. This would be a good time to release the female (after the nest is done or well into its way). This is when the female realizes she could get her little fishie but kicked! It's usually the male who beats the crap out of the female. male to build a bubble nest: anywhere from 20 minutes (or less) to 2 hours. It really depends on how long it takes for the female to WANT to spawn (fish term for breeding or mating).

Oh, and you never know what a betta fish looks like when it's pregnate. There are no signs, all you have to do it spawn them and POP! out jump the baby fries (baby fish). The female doesn't lay her eggs until they spawn. Hope this helps! :)

Hey there, Its probably its 'swim bladder' This is an organ that keeps it boyancy right. This organ can be affected by the fish eating to much and swallowing air in the process. And it could also just be because of poor quality food. If i was u id change the food asap. Go for a high quality fish food and never buy ur foods from a supermarket or discount store. Normally the more u pay the better the food. Here are some brands to look out for which are really good. Wardley, nutrafin and tetra brand. They are all really good but can be expensive at times but u should be able to feed ur fish less because high quality food fills them up more. If ur feeding ur fish flakes, keep to flakes just switch brands. If ur feeding them crumbles, stick to crumbles and so forth. And I just remembered that it could be a possiblity that there is too much ammonia and the water needs changing but because i dont know if uve cleaned it regularly i cant really say mate. that would not be the best thing but all Bettas are different. a male betta is used to being alone. if you would like to do that, keep the tank in shallow water, about the depth of half your tank (about your finger height) and make sure they have a lot of room

ideally a male betta should never be kept with any female bettas unless they are breeding as they 'supposedly' will attack and kill each other. However i have a male betta who has lived with 3 female bettas for 8 months and ive had no problems. he never flares at them, has never attacked them and vice versa. he will even sleep next to the smallest female.

Yes, bettas should go to the surface for air. They are air breathers. They have an organ, the lybrinth, that is very lung like. They breath in air from the surface. Their gills do not work like other fish. If they can not get to the surface for air, they die. Of corse yes their gills are different from other fish so that is why a Betta fish has to be going up to the surface to get air or else they die.

Betta fish can be comfortable in tanks large or small. Large tanks can provide space for your betta, while small tanks keep your betta from being stressed. Whichever kind of tank works for you best is just fine!

golfdish are "coldwater" fish and do better in lower temps and do not need a heater.

goldfish usually do well at around 66 to 68 i believe.

Glow fish are Zebra Danios (Brachydanio rereio) that have had an extra gene from a jellyfish added artificially to make them glow. I do not know if their fry will carry the artificial "glow" gene ot not. In order to breed them you will have to follow the basic rules for breeding Danios.

There are several reasons why housing these two very different types of fish together would be a bad idea. First off, paradise fish need to be housed in warm water and goldfish need to be housed in coldwater, there is no way to compromise here without harming your fish's health and certainly preventing them from thriving. Along with not having proper water temperatures there would also probably be quite a big size difference and a number of aggression issues caused by either of the fish. The paradise fish will probably be able to eat faster then the goldfish thus causing the goldfish to starve, also paradise fish and goldfish have different nutrient requirements and need to be fed different types of food(which you can assume is hard to do if the paradise fish keeps eating the food intended for the goldfish).
